I have real variegated masoniana and it is KILLER and keeps on 
cranking very strongly variegated leaves. HOWEVER i think that 
induced variegation is a very unstable thing, and actually, natural 
variegation may be very unstable as well. you have to grow them into 
substantial populations before actually naming them and asking for 
money when selling them as something NEW.

the thing about dirt is simply that the POT is an unnatural condition 
and dirt is natural unto its location and there is no reason to 
assume that the local earth is going to work in that unnatural thing 
called a pot or container. although some percentage of it might work. 
my dirt has not got enough organic material in it unless I take it 
from boxes in which plants have been growing for ages and 
contributing their fallen leaves and so forth to it. but I do believe 
a great deal of hoopla is made over soil mixes and I feel one can 
grow almost everything from cactus to Platyceriums in the same mix. 
there are a few exceptions but I agree way too much carrying on is 
made of soil mixes.
