Fooling with chemicals, maybe, but I understand for every standard size trifasciata variety (for example 'compacta'), there is the possibility of an equivalent color pattern in the Futura and Hahnii classes. Many of these color patterns have already shown up.The Futuras and the Hahnii's tend to have wider leaves than their standard sized cousins.  Chemical treatments will never produce a color pattern that mother nature herself can't produce given sufficient time. Scientists have introduced genes to make thornless blackberries and the like, but I don't equate this with chemical treatment of sansevieria rhizomes to produce variegated plants.

Also, the sudden appearance of a number of Florica designed Futuras might have something to do with the time involved to raise, by tissue culture, the number of plants it takes to supply all the Lowes and Home Depots, and other plant places around the country and all in time for Spring The Mrs. and I visited Costa Rica a few years ago, and we saw vast acreages devoted to shade cloth where various plants are produced en masse for export.  Agriculture is a very big industry in C.R.

I had noticed that the place itself has been dabbling in Sansevierias and Dracaenas. one of their Dracaenas i saw in the mid sixties in Roehr's nursery. Roehr's used to grow stock material in Puerto Rico and have VAST boatloads of propagating material shipped to them. I saw this brilliant chartreuse striped Dracaena, only three plants in their propagating area, and those three were not for sale. it was not until the mid eighties I saw plants of that kind of colouration. Of course the same variegation or colour aberration can pop up anywhere, any number of times. I suspect Florica has been fooling around with chemicals because wow suddenly they have several "new and different" Sansevierias popping up. And Dracaenas.

Roehr's was owned by Graff, who put out EXOTICA.
