I'm not sure what you mean by "light....to maintain the variegation". Variegation is genetically set in the rhizome - specifically in what is called the 'apical meristem' at the growing rhizome tip. More (or less) light has no effect on the existence of variegation. However, variegated plants as a whole are considered sun-lovers because they have less chlorophyll in their leaves to make the sugars the plant needs to grow. This particular plant does not have enough variegation to noticeably effect its growth and 'happiness'. In fact it has been in a shaded porch since mid April. In winter, it was receiving poor light from a house window. I hasten to say it would probably get taller if I gave it better sunlight - but then it would become larger and even more unwieldly! Ha!
