I believe that it has all got to do with the rhizome.
Let's take an example from variegated sansevierias.
We all know that a variegated sans sometimes sends off a non variegated shoot.
When this happens the shoot should be removed from the mother rhizome 
as close as possible to ensure  variegated plants once again.
This should be repeated every time a non variegated shoot appears.
In the case of boncel every time a patula appears,
this should be removed as close as possible to the boncel rhizome.
This encourages more boncel offsets instead of patulas.

 It is an old story. Paclobutrazol is an antagonist of gibberellic acid, so that a plant treated with this chemical cannot elongate its internodes. Apparently, it has this odd effect on Sans leaves, too! You can buy it freely on ebay or Alibaba or from any chemical store as 'Bonzi'. Another chemical much popular (it should stimulate growth and flowering) is Triacontanol
