dear Build a CarFreeCity members

Thanks so much for joining. I wanted to tell you a
little about myself and the group and my goals as we
get started.

My name is David Ceaser and a few years about, 1997 I
think, I became fascinated with the idea of a
CarFreeCity. Since that time, I have done as much
reading as I can on the subject, have shared my ideas
with as many people as will listen to me and tried to
think about what I can do to make a carfreecity a
reality.

I don't have any training in urban planning or design,
just a passion for ecological and environmental causes
and a huge love of the bicycle and a dislike of what I
feel is the misuse of the automobile in today's
societies.

A year or so ago Gus Yates and I started working
together to make the Carfreecity a reality. We
decided that we wanted to act as the organizing body,
the energy, to push for a Carfreecity.

And so, that is what we are doing. We have, with the
help of a few great friends, established a website,
www.carfreecity.us, which talks about what we are
doing. The website is not complete at this moment and
I am working to finish it as soon as I can.

We would like to become a non-profit so that we can
start to receive donations but have not made that
happen as of yet.

Our idea is to document the amount of interest that
there is in Carfree living in the U.S. and use that
data to push for a city to convert an area to be
carfree or to convince a developer to redevelop an
urban area in a carfree way.

At this point, there are probably a million thoughts
coming into your head, including.... but that won't be
possible because of this or we will need to change a
certain law for that to happen or we will need lots of
money to make that happen.... and yes, all of your
concerns are valid but my feeling is that it isn't
necessary to worry about those things now. We are a
fledgling movement whose time I believe, will come
soon.

What I would like to focus my efforts on is finishing
the first part of this database so that we can begin
to quantify interest in carfree living and then get
the word out to as many like minded organizations,
individuals, etc, etc to register with us, and then to
use that data to link up with other similar projects
and apply for funding to make this project happen.

so, this is what I am thinking. I would like to get
your feedback on these ideas and your ideas if you
have a different strategy that you think we should
pursue. As well, if you to want to pitch in, that
would be great as well.

once again, welcome to our group and I hope that we
will all look back on this as the start of a memorable
creation in the U.S.
