Re: carfree roadblocks (was: package delivery)

My experience, when you've got a great idea, people find all kinds of 
reasons to put you down. All the more validation that the idea is 
great. You would not believe the flak we caught in Palo Alto in 
dedicating one city street as a Bike Boulevard. This ment that about 
every 1/2 mile, there was a car barrier in the street and that stop 
signs were removed along the boulevard. It has worked out great, of 
course. But while it was being planned we had:

- people coming out to complian because bikers wear lycra suits and 
they thought that this was not proper,

- people bringing their young children to city meetings and crying 
(literally, tears) about how this would endanger their children (not 
worried about being crushed by a car, but worried about being hit by 
a biker?), and

- one older fellow who talked about biking in the good old days and 
complaining that us new fangled bikers were just weaklings who 
couldn't take it.

Sheesh. Who cares, it's just a silly thing that needs to be dealt 
with on the way to doing the right thing.

I do have a comment to Colin about his invitation to move to NYC. ARE 
YOU NUTS! (just joking) Sure, it's practical for one to be car free 
in NYC, but the place is jammed with the noisy foul beasts. Not for 
me Colin. What I want is to be able to be mostly car independent, to 
be away from the things, to enjoy a quiet clean polution free home. 
So very early on in this thread we find that a car free city means 
different things to different people. I don't really want to live in 
a very high density village either. Not like I need an acre of my 
own, but a 20 story apartment building, no.

So let's see if we can each project what we would like to see in the 
car free city/village. We don't need to agree. But if each of us has 
a completely different vision, then we better go and find some other 
people to work this with.

BTW, we need a lot more people here. How are we going to do that?
