The smart city radio show could come in handy to us in the US. http://smartcityradio.com/smartcityradio/ I found out about them from Richard Florida's website, who I was pointed to from an article in "the next american city" magazine. (http://www.americancity.org/) They also have a creative100 email list which hasn't been too exciting. http://list.smartcityradio.com/mailman/listinfo/creative100 -- http://www.memphismanifesto.com/ Of certainly more excitement has been learning more about New Urbanist developments: http://cnu.org, http://www.cnu.org/resources/index.cfm?formAction=links there are a number of email lists of varying difficulty to get on: pro-urb-JX7+OpRa80RD1l/[email protected] - the most important, but you must request to be added and say a bit about why you should be. -- The new urbanists are doing a lot of the heavy lifting (getting zoning practices changed) that would be necessary for any decent US Carfree city to be built. urbangeneration-JX7+OpRa80TI0N2V6azTQTe48wsgrGvP@public.gmane.org - they call themselves the next generation of new urbanism. One guy on that list has graduated with an MBA in commercial real estate from UNC with the goal of focusing on financing new urbanist developments. http://www.cnunextgen.org/ [email protected] - yet another snu-JX7+OpRa80RD1l/[email protected] - mostly for students at Univ. of Georgia. Most instructive has been learning Payton Chung's path http://homepage.mac.com/paytonc/ He ran http://breakthegridlock.org/ in Chicago, and organized (I think it was him) a conference back in 2001 featuring Bogota's Penelosa: http://breakthegridlock.org/oldindex.html (scroll down). Most recently he was the coordinator for http://www.cnu.org/cnuxii/ I've also been happy to find out about: http://carfreeuniverse.org/Members/colin/christopherHume Christopher Hume, Toronto Star Architecture Critic whos columns read like he's one of us.
