In response to Todd's wish for more "Carfree 101" classes that make the link between proximity-oriented urban design and transportation engineering, I am happy to report that this past year I twice gave a lecture on carfree urban design to undergraduate courses in "urban and regional transportation planning" at U.C. Berkeley, and I gave a similar lecture to a U.C. Extension course on "sustainable design". In both cases, the faculty members sought me out. So there is interest out there, and I find that young people have no problem making the connection between land use and transportation and grasping the benefits of carfree, "access-by-proximity" urban design.
