Re: Alternatives to TCC

Thanks for the feedback.  I would like to give you a bit of an update, following a session today with all the stakeholders in Cape Town.

 

The session today was represented by the following organisations:

1.       City of Cape Town

2.       Bicycle Empowerment Network

3.       ITDP

4.       ICLEI

5.       Pedal Power

6.       Kagiso Exhibitions & Events.

By coincidence, we had three persons in attendance who are on the WCN Advisory Board.

 

All parties expressed an intent to continue an investigation of an October 2009 event.  We have solicited the assistance of a professional exhibitions firm (Kagiso) which is conducting a financial feasibility of the event.  The target date of the proposed event is the week of 26 October 2009. 

 

The group has developed a rather interesting financial model for hosting the event.  It would be done in conjunction with global bicycle manufacturers who will be paying for floor space to market their products.  Thus, the event would be in conjunction with a sort of global trade show for the bicycle industry.  It would seem that BEN and Kagiso have already done a fair amount of work to deliver this manufacturing trade show.

 

The general consensus was that there is a lot of synergy to simultaneously host a TCC or TCC-type event.  The four to five day event would likely include the following general outline (although the actual programme is still to be work shopped):

 

Day 1 (26 October): Conference programme  

Day 2 (27 October): Conference programme

Day 3 (28 October): Design workshops for two new car-free projects in Cape Town

Day 4 (29 October): Car-free day event in Cape Town

Day 5 (30 October): WCN AGM (if the event became a TCC event)

 

The bicycle trade show would extend for the entire week as a backdrop to the conference.

 

We have another steering committee session on Thursday, 12 February, to receive the feasibility study from Kagiso.  

 

Of course, we fully recognise that it may be best for WCN to hold its internal meetings in Prague this year.  I have advised the group that they may wish to also focus efforts on a 2010 application for TCC.  Thus, I would encourage you and your team to make a decision on what is best for you.

 

Cape Town may decide to still hold something this year, given the various synergies around the first major bicycle trade show on the continent.  This event would not necessarily have to have any affiliation with TCC, although everyone here is quite keen on the idea of the potential linkages with TCC.

Thanks very much for your idea. We would indeed like to talk to you about this in more detail.

 

My personal view is that a South African TCC would make a great 2010 conference proposal. If successful, we could start preparations early this year. This would allow our hard-pressed staff and volunteers to focus on a European event in 2009.

Responses so far seem to suggest a conference-type event with impact is important, but the ability to network and brainstorm more informally is also valued. Of course these ideas are not completely mutually exclusive.

 

We'd like to hear from other members and other interested individuals before developing a detailed proposal. Please continue to send comments until Monday 9 February, which will give the Steering Committee time to consider them before our next monthly meeting.

From a weather perspective, October through April is quite nice in Cape Town.  However, the peak tourist period is December through March, during which the availability of hotel/hostel accommodation can be a bit of a problem.  I suspect that the best months for a conference would be October or April.

 

Yes, it would be a problem if European members and especially the Prague-based staff could not attend. Our own interest would be to gain the insights of these persons to input into our various projects.  It sounds like a significant amount of work would have to be done to secure travel funding.

 

As you note, it might be more appropriate to simply have Cape Town apply for the 2010 TCC, through the normal process of the WCN.

 

We are just enquiring if it would be worthwhile to conduct a brief investigation of the viability of hosting an October 2009 event.  During October, there is also a meeting of global bicycle manufacturers, who are gathering to discuss options for better engaging the African market.  We were thinking that some linkage between the two events could be interesting.

IS early 2010 better, taking advantage of Southern summer in addition to more preparation time? I would really like a proper, robust, Africa-focused event. Related to that, it seems that few Europeans and Americans (from the Americas) would be able to go... and that is fine... yet still other parts of Africa are quite distant from  RSA, so travel  support is essential. 

I would also like the Network and organisers to take care of its Prague-based staff and volunteers and make sure that ALL of them can work at and attend the event.

I would like to put one further idea on the table with regard to this year’s TCC.  The City of Cape Town (South Africa) is currently implementing many car-free and sustainable transport initiatives in the build-up to the hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.  Approximately R 3 billion (US$ 300 million) of project work in this area is currently underway.

 

Having broached the topic of hosting the TCC with the City and local organisations, there would be potential interest to host a 2009 TCC event in view of the event’s relevance to the current initiatives.  Of course, we realise that it may not be a viable option for WCN, but we at least wanted to put the option on the table.

 

The partners who could support the event include:

 

City of Cape Town

Bicycle Empowerment Network

Cape Town Partnership

Local universities.

 

Please let us know if this warrants a further discussion with WCN.
