I'm here to harrass you again about Towards Carfree Cities IX - York 2010.
Lots to report here...

PROGRAMME - We're proud to report that the programme is getting close to a

REGISTRATION - We'd like to hear from any of you who are planning to come
but haven't registered yet, so that we can get an idea of final numbers.
This will help us in our planning, and in finalising the programme. Just
write to me or to york-eIl3k1piWmly0T758RiaJuG/[email protected] If you're not sure if you can come,
let us know what the obstacles are -- perhaps we can help.

TRAVEL - Now's the time to book your travel, especially as British train
tickets rise in price over time. See our Travel page on the website (

http://www.eastcoast.co.uk to book discounted UK rail tickets.

YOUTH EXCHANGE - If you're aged 18-30 and a European citizen, one way to get
to York and have your travel expenses (mostly) covered, is to join the World
Carfree Network youth exchange happening from 22 to 26 June, just before the
conference. Although the deadline for applying has passed, you can still
contact [email protected] ASAP if you're interested.

BENEFIT GIG - We're having a fund raising party in York on Thursday 13 May
with three bands. If you're local, please join us and spread the word.

ACCOMMODATION - There's a lot of interest in 'home stay' accommodation this
year, where out-of-town guests stay in the homes of local residents. We (and
the hosts) are offering this as a free service, although of course guests
self-cater any meals in the home. If you're interested in a home stay,

host for an out-of-town guest, please do the same! For other forms of

TOWARDS CARFREE CITIES IX – YORK 2010 "How do We Get There?"
28 June to 1 July 2010 We are pleased to announce that the ninth Towards
Carfree Cities conference will be held in the historic city of York,
England, from Monday 28 June to Thursday 1 July 2010. We invite you to join
us for this international gathering of experts, practitioners and
campaigners dedicated to promoting sustainable and equitable alternatives to
the motor car. The focus is on strategy, collaboration and exchange,
assisting the practical work of conference participants, from organising
carfree days to planning the carfree cities of the future.

Coming to the UK for the first time, this year's conference is hosted by
Carfree UK, with the support of The Co-operative Membership, Cycle Heaven of
York, Stockholm Environment Institute - York, and others.

This year's conference will focus on bringing carfree communities to life,
considering a range of strategies. We are asking the questions: how should
we implement the theory, how do we best promote carfree development and how
do we gain support for the conversion of car-oriented cities? In short, 'How
Do We Get There?'

We will also learn from and seek inspiration from the past, by looking at
how the medieval pedestrian city was organised spatially, and how these
principles could be applied to future settlements. The key challenges of
fostering political and public acceptability for car reduction measures will
be examined, including an exploration of the conditions under which people
willingly give up the car in exchange for the benefits of living in
traffic-free environments.

The conference will be held within the walls of medieval York at the Priory
Street Centre, a short walk from the railway station. The World Carfree
Network annual meeting will follow the conference on Friday 2 July.
