Seeking sustainable transport experts and campaigners in the US

Sorry for bothering you with this on the list:

I am looking for activists and experts in the US working on sustainable 
transport. In particular I am interested in local initiatives and groups working 
on "car culture" (if there is such a thing in the positive sense of 'culture').

My background: I am going to travel through the US in coming weeks (DC-NYC-San 
Francisco) to interview experts on sustainable transport. That's part of a 
research comparing European and US approaches. As an environmental policy 
officer of Deutsche Bahn (German railways) my professional focus is on planned 
high speed rail systems and public transport' -- but I do have strong personal 
interest in local structures and bottom-up policy making.
