- Reduce Global Warming and Win a Free Bike!

The World Carfree Network is joining JSL Films in sponsoring the Paul
Goodman Changed My Life Bicycle Contest. 49 years ago, philosopher
Paul Goodman demanded change for his city’s streets. We want you to do
the same. Ask your city to do its part to reduce global warming, and
you could win a brand-new bicycle.

In 1961, philosopher Paul Goodman wrote Banning Cars in New York, a
radical urban planning tract that made a convincing case for
eliminating private auto traffic from Manhattan. Though it wasn’t to
be in NYC, many world cities have since come to agree with Goodman
that a livable urban center and a healthy environment require limiting
traffic.

Submit five proposals for how your town or city can reduce global
warming to your city council or mayor, and we’ll enter you in a
drawing to win a brand-new bicycle. One winner in the US will receive
a Breezer Uptown 8 commuter/hybrid bicycle, and one European resident
will win a Biomega CPH bike.

World Carfree News to see more ACTION. With this issue of the monthly
newsletter, an ACTION section has been added, that will highlight
specific issues that are currently taking place. This might be a
protest or long-term lobby effort - mobility justice issues need to be
heard. A new issue will be featured in the ACTION section every month.

- Carfree Times Issue 59

Joel Crawford's latest Carfree Times has just been released. Included
is coverage on global warming, conservatives and transport policy,
greening Portugal and a feature story on a potential carfree planning
project "Gaslight Village" in Philadelphia, USA.

- CIVITAS Plus II call is open - The latest phase of the EU's largest
initiative to support sustainable urban transport projects has just
published its call for proposals. The 18 million Euro project supports
collaborative efforts with a wide geographic spread. Deadline is April
2011.

- There is a "Carfree Professionals" group on LinkedIn (a social
network for making professional connections). LinkedIn members can
find this group by searching for "Carfree Professionals" in the search

Grand Prix Automobiles or Free public transport?

In France, there are people actively fighting for free public
transport. This includes some associations and also New Anticapitalist
Party (NPA). Moreover, there are people actively fighting against
"Grand Prix", automobile racing, Formula 1, '24 hours of Le Mans'.

In this case, the two fights become one fight, because we can see that
Grand Prix organisation in the city of Pau costs the equivalent price
of free public transport in this city - roughly 2 million euros per
year. That is why some activists and politicians from NPA promote the
idea for Pau to provide free public transport instead of subsidising
auto racing.

- Incredible traffic jam. Unbelievably, a road in north-eastern China
experienced bumper to bumper traffic lasting about 4 weeks and
stretching over a hundred kilometers. The jam was caused by
construction work and lorries carrying coal. Drivers complained that
they only traveled 0.3 km in a day.

-Critical Mass in Curitiba, Brazil experienced police aggression for
the first time, as police waved heavy guns, and dispersed the ride.
This was a September 27 Bicicletada.

-The European Commission has suggested an 89% cut in transport
emissions could be possible by 2050, using existing technologies. This
includes both technical and non-technical measures, and are to be
included in a process that result with a new transport white paper
later this year.

-All across the Balkans, cities observed World Carfree Day this year.
From Zagreb to Belgrade, and Banja Luka to Tirana, cites held partial
closures of city centers and conducted bike rides and other events.

- As in 113 other cities in China, Chengdu also celebrated World
Carfree Day. A downtown traffic closure was carried out, and enforced
by authorities. Elsewhere in the city, the 23rd Chengdu International
Motor Show was held.

- In Maryland, USA, a member of the Green Party and senate candidate,
Natacha Pettigrew, was killed by a driver of an SUV one morning while
she was out cycling. She was considered to be a future leader for both
the party and state.

- Downtown San Juan, Puerto Rico, planning carfree conversions. The
city plans to ban cars from large parts of its downtown and make the
entire area walkable by 2030. This follows the mayor Jorge Santini's
'Walkable City' proposal and features integrated transport systems and
green corridors.

- The Centre for Mobilities Research, at Lancaster University,
England, held the first Bicycle Politics Workshop this September, with
the aim to take a deep look at the potentials of cycling, and coupling
that with political thought. A useful report of this highly
interesting international meeting has been prepared.

- UK's Travel Actively has published its Monitoring Report, which
demonstrates its successes in 2009. It reports here on its 50
projects, claiming to have reached 160,000 people, and hoping to help
1.8 million people to become physically active through active travel
by 2012. The blog providing this report also features discussion on
the transport issues facing the island of Guernsey.

- Australian transport planner Rachel Smith has developed a blueprint
for cycling super highways, after having researched best cycling
practices in 24 cities around the world. The 'Cycling Super Highways
Toolkit' contains insights into many of the top cycling cities as well
as an elaboration of the author's vision for more bicycle oriented
cities.

- European Mobility week in Brussels and Sofia were celebrated by a

- crisis_mania was a project combining a series of workshops that
focused on housing, travel and food - in a time of crisis.
Hitch-hiking, Ecotopia bike tour, squat living, and many other topics

- A new type of bicycle has been invented in Hungary - the String
Bike. This is a bike that does away with the chain, and uses a
different mechanism for moving the wheels, called Stringdrive. Bicycle
manufacturer Schwinn-Csepel is commencing with full production this
October.
