- Towards Carfree Cities is coming to Mexico!

Mexico's second city, Guadalajara, has witnessed the rise of an
important movement of citizens and organisations that promote a shift
in policies and practices towards sustainable mobility. When Enrique
Penalosa, Bogota's ex-mayor, recently visited, he gushed: "We would
have loved to have had this level of social capital when we tried to
implement changes in Bogotá". In light of this we are pleased to
announce that the tenth Towards Carfree Cities Conference will be take
place in Guadalajara from September 4th to 9th, 2011. The call for
programme proposals will soon be released and input will be sought
through mid-January. Get ready, and welcome all to Mexico!

- Carbusters is looking for a new breath of life

Since the office in Prague closed, Carbusters fell asleep and is now
waiting for a charming prince to rescue her. The editorial collective
was populated by volunteers and staff working out of the WCN castle in
Prague, but the castle has been vacated. We are therefore looking for
enthusiastic people to manage the website (www.carbusters.org) and
coordinate the printed magazine.  We need help both in doing the tasks
of editors as well as updating the website regularly. Fundraising help
will also be a wonderful way to set out on new adventures.

We hope to get back to our mission of documenting the carfree way of
life as soon as possible. The magazine has more than 10 years of
history and it undoubtedly has a terrific future, but this is where we
need your help! The former editorial staff will of course be happy to
help with this transition process.

The World Carfree Network is joining JSL Films in sponsoring the Paul
Goodman Changed My Life Bicycle Contest. 49 years ago, philosopher
Paul Goodman demanded change for his city’s streets. We want you to do
the same. Ask your city to do its part to reduce global warming, and
you could win a brand-new bicycle.

In 1961, philosopher Paul Goodman wrote Banning Cars in New York, a
radical urban planning tract that made a convincing case for
eliminating private auto traffic from Manhattan. Though it wasn’t to
be in NYC, many world cities have since come to agree with Goodman
that a livable urban center and a healthy environment require limiting
traffic.

Submit five proposals for how your town or city can reduce global
warming to your city council or mayor, and we’ll enter you in a
drawing to win a brand-new bicycle. One winner in the US will receive
a Breezer Uptown 8 commuter/hybrid bicycle, and one European resident
will win a Biomega CPH bike.

- Bicycle Film Festival (Munich, Germany)

The local environmental organisation Green City and the Munich Cycling
Campaign Radlhauptstadt will present the Bicycle Film Festival for the
first time in Germany. Dates are December 2-5

The subject of the Festival is Cycling around the world with many movies
about cycling in different countries, travelling and interesting
experiences.

- Bike Town Bash, Chicago, USA, Dec. 4, 2010

Help the Active Transportation Alliance celebrate its role as the
leading voice for sustainable transportation in Chicagoland by coming
to the Bike Town Bash on Saturday, December 4. To honor 25 years of
making the streets safer for everyone, Active Trans invites attendees
to take a trip back to 1985 with a best ‘80s costume contest. Skinny
ties, big hair, and acid-washed jeans welcome. Enjoy beer, soda and
appetizers while taking advantage of bike-related goodies at the
silent auction.

Stop an Industrial Corridor from being developed in the US Pacific
Northwest!

Currently the wishes of big oil dictate transforming the rural highway
12 through scenic territory in US states such as Montana and Idaho
into an industrial transit corridor that would entail a number of
over-sized trucks with extremely large and heavy shipments. Residents
of the affected states believe that if this comes to pass, the
opportunities for cycling, hiking and recreation in those areas will
forever be gone.

ExxonMobil would like to deliver equipment coming from Korea to the
tar sands in Alberta, Canada. The haulage would have a devastating
effect on the road, and many believe this could be transformed into a
permanent industrial transit corridor.

- Los Angeles has had its first ever Ciclovia experience on October
10. About 100,000 people tried out seven and a half miles of carfree
streets between East Hollywood and Boyle Heights on bicycle,
roller-blades, skate-boards, by foot and in running shoes. The event
was deemed a huge success that exceeded all expectations. Ciclovia is
expected to repeat five times in 2011 and become a monthly happening
by 2012. The organizers hope to eventually hold it on a weekly basis,
like in Bogota, Colombia.

- The Department of Transportation of Illinois, USA has announced a
$90 million level of federal transportation money for the Illinois
Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP). This will fund many bicycle
and pedestrian projects in Chicago and Illinois, and includes a cycle
track pilot project.
Active Transportation Alliance

- After Zurich, Switzerland, New York City has also provided the
opportunity, on the basis of an exception, to a developer to construct
housing without having to include provisions for car parking. A large
percentage of the dwellings in Navy Green (Fort Greene, Brooklyn) will
be available to low-income brackets, and an open space of 32,000
square feet is also planned. Bike parking will be available,
and several bus lines pass by. Opening is set for December, 2011.

- After Fazilka and Ferozpur, Amritsar has become the third Indian
city in the Punjab region to adopt a carfree zone. These cities are
all in the Pakistan border area, and have received special attention
of late, with Fazilka taking the lead in implementing carfree zones.

- Toronto has elected a new mayor, with the name of Rob Ford. Apart from
declaring war on graffiti and slashing money for the arts, he really
likes subway systems, but has had some disparaging words to say about
city cycling.

-Montreal residents had the opportunity to consider how to convert
their existing neighbourhoods into carfree ones, thanks to a series of
workshops and events hosted by the Goethe Institute. Markus Heller,
board member of WCN and other experts from Germany and Norway
were invited. The ideas were well received, and locals are aiming
to put them to good use.
