I don't know anybody from Porto Alegre but what I've seen on the news and
comments on blogs, there's a significant number of people that are on the
driver's side. Even local autorithies, when they arrived on the crime scene,
they primarily wanted to "clear the road" to allow traffic.

The driver declared he will present himself to authorities today. More than
48 hours after the crime (this will make things much easier for him
according to brazilian legislation). Probably there will be a protest group
at the police station to "welcome" him.

I believe any of these initiatives may help.
