The Phoenix
It landed quietly inmidst of us, just after New Moon, on the Eve of Burning Man half a world away, and out of the shadow of ages long forgotten. We gave it wings and feathers, labored long to form a beautiful head, and prepared all for the Phoenix to take flight from ist fiery nest of embers and ashes, at the onset of Harvest.
The fields are yellow with corn and wheat, boughs laden with pears and apples in the gardens of Sheshory, grapes on the vine, our campaigns having peaked, my eyes saturated with new sights, my senses elated by new impressions from the four winds, heart full of wonder over new friends from many countries.
It is almost midnight now, few songs around the fire, a drum talking lowly, darkness all around a circle of a couple hundred of us.
Your faces turn towards me as I step out of the shadow of the sculpture over my head, and I paint a bridge for your imagination to stand on as we look back upon what we choose to leave behind like the empty stalks and husks in the field: a year has gone by with gains and losses, love came and faded away like summer dew, our cat Kimba was killed by a car as I was biking far away along the Danube just a few days ago, and hopes for an age of domination and fear coming to an end wane as war can be waged unilaterally to globalize cowboy culture.
Good and bad things in our basket. This is an opportunity to toss out the burden.
You and I have done our share to shake loose from the ways of the past, patriarchy and destruction of natural and cultural livelihood, in our personal lives and in our communities.
Now, as we lift the Phoenix to place it into the fire, we prepare to make room for the new, as we believe that Another World is Possible- construir lavenir: building the future.
With the death of Nazi Fascism in the Europe of 1945 imperialism has climaxed in the Old World and is on the wane. Rome has fallen, and even Washington DC has to see change in the eye today, as hundreds of thousands of us took its streets since Seattle and 9/11.
We have an immense power, and we are afraid to use it.
To abuse it, just as the generation in power does, and many before them, for thousands of years. But can we afford not to dance and fight and sing with might for a world that works for all?- Myself, I am scared to have taken even this space and power, facing so many wonderful people, for recreating this ceremony at Ecotopia. And still I do it.
Because I feel an amazing trust from you to allow me to co-create it with you. And I want to apologize for this being mostly a one-man-show, and invite you to be part of the sculpting and crafting of this circle next year in the 15th Ecotopia next year- I DO need help.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for holding that trust .
It is in your attention and consciousness only that this circle here is cast tonight.
It is a vessel, a stage and a compost pile to recycle and improvise culture, the emptiness of the ashes a possibilty for change, an altar to hold the harvest of what we have accomplished so far. Which is a lot, if you look at it.
If we turn now on this bridge and face the road ahead, the red glow of the flames casts only little light into the future, yet the darkness holds many dreams in its womb that may guide the way, many stories to inspire us. I took the name and the ring that were given to me, even tho I do not know the way.
To me, it is the Ring of Oneness, of unity of all that lives, past and future, of Fire and Water, Earth and Sky. And indeed, in accepting it, it becomes a Ring of Power, and I let go of the fear that it will corrupt my heart, as there are many of us who are part of this fellowship of friends helping each other.
Ecotopias power and freedom comes, I believe, from being somewhat in Outer Space, outside of the day-to-day battles of politics, an island in time, with no mandate beyond our own morning circle, but with a legitimy that comes from being a holograph, an image of Europe and the world, because we come from all over: Each one brings a very important puzzle piece to this synphonic sculpture of world art, this playground for knowledge, culture , arts and music, a dancefloor to improvise life as it could be, beautifully, passionately, and in harmony with Earth.
What I found most distinctive from most other movements around conference tables and war flags that Ive seen on my travels is that we have a vision that goes beyond fighting the bad stuff- which is part of the vision of Ecotopia, but it does not stop there.
Its other half is about creation. Another World exists. We have started creating it, in many small places like the small Ecotopian community Cihelna, that came out of the synergy that Ecotopia has unleashed over the years, or sometimes even in one moment of just one friendship being born.
Thats why I have taken the ashes of Burning Man, of sweatlodges around the world, dust from the destroyed village of Libkovice that hosted Ecotopia in Czech Republic, earth from a permaculture paradise garden on Hawaii, mixed them with those of this nights Phoenix, and to share them with you as organic fertilizer for new and old dreams, to help them germinate, grow, blossom and bear fruit maybe even better than Mangos, who knows... ;-)
There will be more fires in this lifetime. Add your own ashes, earth from your garden or permaculture balcony. Pass some on to your friends with the seed of your dreams and intentions. Create magic.
Thank you for daring to dream wildly and beautifully...
aloha y rabia, Frodo T. Kempf
PS: See you in Ecotopia, particularly those of you who couldnt come so far!!!

Don't hold back, by Clare Torry/Alan Parsons Project
Ride the wave of destiny
Rise above the crest
And believe everything that happens to you happens for the best
Don't allow the world of men
To turn your head no more
Cause if you can't let yourself go
What are you saving yourself for?
Dont hold back, don't hold back, don't hold back, reach out
Touch the sky with your mind's eye, don't be afraid to reach out
Don't let your fantasies be blinded by the light
For you don't have to save your wildest dreams for the night
