[Pga_europe_resistance] Construction of Channel

Government of Ukraine Approved the Plan of Construction of Navigable Channel
Through Danube Reserve

Government of Ukraine has approved construction of the channel Danube -
Black Sea through the Danube biosphere reserve on Bystroye estuary and has
issued the instructions on its realization.

Government has approved the feasibility study by this decree of the variant
proposed by "Ukrinvestexpertize". The projected channel will be 162.2
kilometers length, will have maritime channel 3.1 kilometers length and
would be meant for the vessels with draught of 7.2 meters.

Execution of construction works is committed to "Delta-Lotsman" firm. The
total project costs is 144.938 millions of grivna (more than 27 billions of
USD). As it was reported before, in the end of March 2003 Georgy Kirpa, the
Minister of transport has declared the intention of the Ministry to built
the channel earlier the end of 2003.

National Academy of Science of Ukraine and environmental NGOs repeatedly
demanded from the Transport Ministry and Government and other authority
bodies to bar from building of the channel Danube - Black Sea through
Bystroye estuary because this will destroy the reserve that situated in this
place. Environmental organizations proposed to built the channel through
Zhebrianskaya bay. Bystroye estuary is the part of the reserve that is
included in the UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere reserves, and in water
and marsh grounds of international value.
