If people aren't taking a handful of their previous good compost and adding
that to their next compost pile, results from pile 1 and pile 2 will be
very different, as the organisms could well be quite different.

But that variability is reduced (note I did not say "gone") by adding the
organisms from pile 1 into pile 2.  And of course, with all piles getting
the same inocula, the variability is reduced.  Maintaining initial starting
materials helps maintain similar biology as well, and managing temps in a
similar way, turning at the same times, etc.  There is of course the joy of
changes in species dominance based on temp / moisture seasonality.  But,
what was dominant and highly active in May will still be in the pile in
August, but now in a dormant stage most likely.  So, diversity will not
change when you assess presence, although a diversity measure that assesses
species presence times number of individuals of each species will
definately show a change. What if the diversity measure used is one where
presence, activity and number of individuals is assessed?  Yet a different
value will be obtained.

So, what is most important to know?  Diversity indicates need to include
that seasonal shifting in dominance and activity.  It does no good to have
all the species that need to be active in the spring, but then have none of
the species that need to be active as temp/moisture/food resources shift
into early summer conditions, mid-summer, late summer, or early fall mode.
Crop production will not be adequate without them all.

Hi Dr. Ingham,

As always thank you for your generosity of sharing your knowledge,
experience and time. The answer seems to me to lie in the diversity of the
microbiology but the benefits are in dialing into specific group of
microbes in the right ratios at the right time. I would think a tea laden
with the correct nematodes might be the answer to certain grubs, bacteria
and fungi grown specifically to target plant pathogens can't be far off.
Could this be the reason the efficacy of compost teas are all over the
place when you read some of the research? It would make sense that the
individual inputs of the compost in different proportions would make teas
different in ratios of microbes and thus their abilities. This is beyond my
ability and scope as a front yard gardener/bucketeer but I am still going
to see if meal worms really eat Styrofoam and if I find some diseased
plants running their debris through a worm bin this year and then if
possibl e have the vermicompost analyzed.
