To Whom it May Concern,



The Institute for the Humanities at Simon Fraser University recognizes that
it exists on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded Coast Salish
territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and
Səl̓ílwətaʔ/ Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.



The Institute acknowledges that it is responsible to the beings (human and
non-human), lands, and waters of this region and it strives to be an ally
of their causes.


We affirm the Indigenous Peoples as true guardians of these territories,
and from this understanding we support the Wet’suwet’en people, their clan
governance systems, and hereditary chiefs, and also condemn the actions of
the Canadian government for violently interfering with the bodies of those
defending the land and its people on this territory.


The Canadian Government under the leadership of Justin Trudeau has
committed to an ongoing process of restoring relationships with Indigenous
peoples, promising Truth and Reconciliation, as well as fulfilling its
obligations under the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of
Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). *Both the UNDRIP and the TRC affirm the
fundamental principle of “Free, Prior and Informed Consent” not just of the
elected band councils, which have jurisdiction only on reservations, but
also of clans and hereditary chiefs.*



Therefore, with the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial
Discrimination, we call for the immediate withdrawal of the RCMP from
Wet’suwet’en territory, and support the right of the Wet’suwet’en people to
continue in their actions to protect the lands, waters, and futures of
their people.


We also call on other academic departments and institutions at SFU and
beyond to join in condemning this state violence against Indigenous
nations.
