Not quite. Even in those days the objective was just to put a fawny
and corrupt government ahead of the invaded state. England did
never exactly conquer Afghanistan. It has always been a game of
influence. Back then England was worried with Russian influence in
the area (or that Russia might have more influence than England).
I insist, the propaganda back then was not very dissimilar to that of
today. That's what makes me think we haven't gone much further,
although it's obvious we're advancing.
