The relationship of president and *his* wife is always a political big
deal in Washington, going all the way back; hell, it's hard to imagine
how this kind of representation of leadership will morph if a woman is
ever elected.
But, more specifically, and I thought I made this pretty clear, were
you asleep during the 8 years of the Clintons? I can't stand either of
them (though him less than her), but they were *endlessly* hounded by
the right wing. She was regularly called a lesbian. McCain made a
truly disgusting joke about Chelsea's lineage to that effect, and so
on. (To say nothing of all the speculation re: Hillary's role in Vince
Foster's suicide; i.e., she's a lesbian but a whore too!)
And, from the very start, Bush made all sorts of "I am not Clinton"
noises, including public signs that he and his wife are not sexually
estranged. All the while complaining, incessantly and with great
hypocrisy, about how liberals and the Clintons made the "personal
political".
so what if

Well, I wasn't pointing out his change of mind. Rather that the
Guardian gets this story only because someone who works for Bush
talked about what happened, and the point of my post was to suggest
that some of the details seemed to be intended to do political work,
along the lines I've suggested.
This is, after all, a list about politics, as well as other things. I
take it we all agree that criticizing the powerful for being
hypocrites is always on-topic here.
If I've missed your point and you were merely criticizing my construal
of things, well, that's another thing altogether; in that case, I'm
certainly willing to discuss these issues further.
Best,
