To be honest, I never knew that "Paki" was a racial slur.  I consider myself
fairly educated, but I think most Americans do not know this.  However once
corrected I would make an apology, and change my behaviour.

It's even in the dictionary:

Used as a disparaging term for a person from Pakistan or neighboring
