In the British days of mods, rockers, Teddy Boys, and similar swaggering bullies, it was considered sporting to indulge in "Paki bashing," which involved wandering the streets until such a group encountered a Pakistani (or any other sub-continental person) and striking them in such a way as to make their slicked down hair pop up. No need to try to make sense of this "sport' -- I only refer to it as relevant to how one might identify the connotations of the word, "Paki." It seems to me it best not be heard as reassuring or bland.

It's even in the dictionary:

Pak·i Pronunciation Key (pk)
n. Chiefly British Offensive Slang pl. Pak·is
Used as a disparaging term for a person from Pakistan or neighboring
countries or for the descendant of such a person.

Good article. Thanks.
