The Central Committee of the Socialist Unity Centre of
India (SUCI) at its meeting held in Calcutta on 30th
September, 2003 expressed grave concern over Calcutta
High Court’s recent order prohibiting and restricting
meetings and demonstrations in Calcutta between 8 a.m.
to 8 p.m. in working days. The Central Committee
strongly felt that this draconic order, unheard in the
history of democratic governance of the world, hatched
at the behest of the capitalist class and its rulers,
not only militates against the fundamental rights as
enshrined in the Constitution but also strikes at the
very roots of democratic ideas and it definitely
smacks of a fascistic design.
Pointing out the fact that once again it clearly
proved that so-called neutrality of the judiciary is
nothing but a myth and in reality it is a defender of
the aggregate interest of the capitalist class and as
such its another class organ, the Central Committee
strongly opined that the manner in which the CPI(M)
and its government in West Bengal, in their bid to
remain in power, is wooing and capitulating the ruling
capitalist class, succumbing to their pressures one
after another, and repeatedly pleading for imposition
of restrictions upon meetings and demonstrations using
the sugar coated word ‘reasonable’, had clearly paved
the ground for the High Court to deliver such
anti-democratic order.
The Central Committee is convinced that the people of
West Bengal under the circumstances are left with no
other alternative but to ignore it and rise up
movement against this highly unjust order. Committing
the party to such sustained resistance movement
demanding immediate annulment of this order. The
Central Committee calls upon the people of West Bengal
and of the whole country to join it with all their
strength in their command.
