Protest in Spain leaves 50 injured

MADRID. —At least 50 people were injured yesterday in clashes between 
police and dockworkers in various Spanish cities, Prensa Latina reported.

Nearly 14,000 workers employed by Izar, the country’s largest naval 
construction company, are demanding new labor contracts, and their protests 
have produced violent clashes with anti-riot units over several weeks.

The most serious events happened in Seville, where trade union sources 
affirmed that 38 workers were injured, while government authorities 
reported 12 policemen injured.

The president of the trade union committee, Ignacio Sánchez, explained to 
reporters that the main disturbances occurred when the police entered the 
industrial facilities, where it was also reported that numerous vehicles 
parked nearby were heavily damaged.

Some 300 dockworkers in Seville used rocks to confront the police, who in 
turn fired rubber bullets and tear gas. The State Society of Industrial 
Participation (SEPI), an Izar shareholder, announced that it met with the 
trade unions in order to inform them of offers and in that way obtain ship 
construction contracts for dockworkers in four cities.

The unions are demanding that the company does not close down any 
workplaces or reduce personnel in the next few years.
