William Hinton: 1919-2004

One of the greatest voices that addressed the English-speaking world on 
behalf of the Chinese Revolution under Mao Zedong, and later against the 
betrayals of the Deng Xiao-Ping reversal, has died. This is truly sad news.

For those under forty five, I always recommend reading either "Fanshen" 
(the story of the Chinese Revolution from one peasant village), "Hundred 
Days War" (detailing one university and the struggles-- as they saw it-- 
carried out by the Red Guards in the Cultural Revolution) or, perhaps most 
importantly, "The Great Reversal" (detailing the destruction of the massive 
communes, peasant collective life and the Iron Rice Bowl after Deng took 
over the Communist Party of China after the death of Mao).
