NO VOICE FOR WORKERS IN
BUSH-KERRY DEBATES

There were no surprises at the first debate between 
Republican President George W. Bush and his Democratic 
challenger, Sen. John Kerry, on Sept. 30. Though billed as 
a major clash over foreign policy, it only served to show 
how little difference there truly is between them.

GUTIERREZ PROTESTS EXCLUSION FROM
VICE-PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE IN OHIO

On Tuesday, Oct. 5, in conjunction with the national 
debate, Workers World Party's Vice Presidential candidate 
Teresa Gutierrez visited Cleveland. Gutierrez and the 
party's presidential candidate, John Parker, are on the 
ballot and have write-in status in several states. They 
are official write-in candidates in Ohio.

Gutierrez, a Latina lesbian who resides in New York, is an 
activist against war, racism, sexism, homophobia, and 
economic injustice, and a longtime fighter for socialism.

"I plan to join with students, youth, and working class 
people in protesting this exclusionary millionaires' 
debating society," Gutierrez stated. "How can these two 
rich, white politicians, Vice President Dick Cheney and 
Senator John Edwards, come to Cleveland, the poorest city 
in the entire country, and argue about how best to conquer 
the suffering people of Iraq?

“Who will speak for those who are paying the price for 
this war, through cutbacks in their basic necessities and 
with their lives? Our campaign strives to be that voice, a 
voice for full employment, a voice against racism, sexism, 
and anti-lesbian/gay/bi/trans bigotry, a voice to bring 
the troops home now."

"These are the issues that I and other anti-war 
candidates, are being kept out of this phony 'debate.'"

In addition to being shut out of the Cheney-Edwards 
debate, Gutierrez was not invited to a third-party 
candidates' debate taking place Tuesday evening at 
Baldwin-Wallace College, and her campaign was denied a 
spot during a speak-out sponsored by Case. "We resolutely 
object to these discriminatory exclusions, but our voice 
will be heard,” Gutierrez stated. “We will take our 
campaign to the people on the streets.”

ON THE AIR IN NEW YORK, TEXAS

An interview with Workers World Party presidential 
candidate John Parker was aired repeatedly on 
WBAI-Pacifica Radio in the New York City area the week of 
Oct. 3-9 as part of the station’s series to inform 
listeners about alternative candidates.

The "Fight Back!" program on KPFT-Pacifica Radio in 
Houston, Texas, interviewed WWP vice-presidential 
candidate Teresa Gutierrez, a San Antonio native, Oct. 5, 
while she was protesting outside the Vice Presidential 
debates in Cleveland.  Gutierrez talked about the need 
immediate withdrawal of all US troops from Iraq as well as 
full employment and health care for all workers and the 
abolition of the racist death penalty.
  
Parker and Gutierrez will be in Houston to speak at 
S.H.A.P.E. Community Center on Sun., Oct. 24 at 3 p.m. 
 All are invited to hear a working-class alternative to 
the Democrats and Republicans.

While in Texas, they will visit activist on death row.

SUPPORT THE STRUGGLING HOTEL WORKERS
LeiLani Dowell for Congress campaign

In San Francisco, workers at four hotels have gone on a 
two-week strike. Loud picket lines have been set up at all 
four buildings, 24 hours a day. Bosses at 10 other hotels 
in San Francisco have responded with a lockout of 2,500 
workers.
The Dowell for Congress campaign is inspired by and 
pledges its support to the hotel workers' struggle. These 
workers are courageously and unashamedly standing up for 
their rights, and we salute them. Furthermore, we denounce 
the shameless lockout being carried out in San Francisco.

S. CAROLINA: CANDIDATES TO SPEAK AT WINTHROP

Oct. 12, 2004

Candidates representing the Libertarian, Socialist and 
Workers World parties will present their platforms to 
students and the public on Oct. 19 and 20 at Winthrop 
University.

John Parker and Teresa Gutierrez, presidential and 
vice-presidential candidates respectively for the Workers 
World Party, will hold a question and answer forum at 7:30 
p.m. Oct. 20 in Plowden Auditorium. LeiLani Dowell, Peace 
& Freedom Party candidate for Congress in California, will 
join them. It is open to the public. Cultural event status 
for Winthrop students is pending.

Parker was part of a fact-finding delegation to the Sudan 
and Iraq. Gutierrez is a national organizer of the 
campaign to free five Cubans held prisoner in the U.S. and 
is the first open lesbian to run for vice president. 
Dowell is a founding member of Queers for Peace and 
Justice and also of FIST (Fight Imperialism, Stand 
Together), an anti-war youth and student group.
