[L-I] Experiences at University of North Dakota

I was at the University of North Dakota [Grand Forks] for thirteen years:
tenured, full prof, departmental Indian Studies chair for several years,
chair of Honors, member of  the graduate faculty. I taught thousands of
students [and liked just about every one of them], won a number of
prestigious awards [Student Government, State of North Dakota.]  We then
remained in the Grand Forks setting for three additional years until we
returned to my native Mountain West.  At every point, I was deeply involved
in social justice activities -- both within the University and in the broad,
general region. The last several years at the University of North Dakota
were the most unpleasant -- owing to some faculty and most administrators --
in my almost 30 years of college/university teaching.  I have a section on

In our Gray Hole, the ghosts often dance in the junipers and sage, on the
game trails, in the tributary canyons with the thick red maples, and on the
high windy ridges -- and they dance from within the very essence of our own
inner being. They do this especially when the bright night moon shines down
on the clean white snow that covers the valley and its surroundings.  Then
it is as bright as day -- but in an always soft and mysterious and
