On Martin Luther King

On the matter of what Martin King would or would not have done had he lived:

As RBB is aware, we spent years in the very hottest parts of the civil rights movement. I think we have a very good handle on Martin King -- directly and via his closest colleagues, several of whom we knew extremely well.  Loki Mulholland commented very accurately on Facebook the other day that I had driven him on the "most dangerous 15 miles in the USA" the day I picked him up at the Jackson airport and took him to the funeral of Medgar Evers. That simply reinforced that which I already knew about the man and my contacts and observation in the years that followed never changed my most favorable assessment:  He was an extremely brave guy, a very committed Gandhian, and he would have continued his opposition to the Vietnam War had he lived.  I am absolutely certain that he would have opposed the various sanguinary madnesses that have followed -- in addition to sharply challenging the social injustice that has steadily grown from high hills into steep mountains.
