FROM JYRI:

Hunter,
With reference to the passing of Margaret Thatcher and the inevitable panegyrics, here’s a comment from former Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr (Labor Party)*:

http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/political-news/i-couldnt-believe-it-bob-carr-recalls-margaret-thatchers-unabashedly-racist-comment-about-australia-20130410-2hksz.html

I would say the lady was being true to character in this one. Nonetheless, I don’t hold with celebrating her death in the streets as some people are doing in England. Death is death, and there are things to respect even in the case of political enemies.

Just filed my taxes for 2012. Alea iacta est.... It seem I’ll have to pay them a bit more at the end of the year, but such is life.
Best wishes,

Jyri

*Carr’s lingo, classifiable as General bordering on Cultivated Australian, tends towards being understandable for non-Aussies. Australia has very little regional variation of dialect, but surprisingly the main varieties of speech, Broad, General and Cultivated Australian, don’t always correlate directly with social class, though slightly more with Cultivated. I used to have great fun as a schoolboy tormenting my English teachers here by overdoing my Aussie accent. Now I can understand why it grates (“grites”) on some people’s ears.
