Fw: from Stephen Harvey: IWW forest-fire fighters (ca 1919)

A very interesting, and not surprising, very positive assessment of IWW fire fighters by US Forest Service officials -- despite the poisonous Red Scare then in full swing.  Hope the page comes through.

In our own contemporary fire situation, I wrote this the other day to a good friend:

"We have had long and unbroken period of high, dry heat -- upper 90s to 100 stuff -- from the end of June onward.  Not much rain and there are water concerns.  So far, brush and forest fires in this area, not too close to us, have been quickly contained.  Much, much bigger fires have been well to the west of us.  However, at this point in time, fire danger hereabouts is considered to be at its highest peak.  But we are beginning to slip into the 80s.  In mid-August, I'll see the extremely heavy white clouds with a very dark underbelly that herald the approach of Fall." (H)

  I'm just reading a book titled "Hoboes, Bindlestiffs, Fruit Tramps, and the Harvesting of the West", by Mark Wyman.  Fascinating and very good book - a couple of paragraphs made me think of you, about Wobblies fighting forest fires.  I've scanned the page and hope you can see it well.
