Supportive note from Susan M. Power / and brief round-up comments

Surprisingly little discussion list comment on Federal spying stuff. A few of our list people have at earlier points -- and that's much appreciated.  I do assume people are reading what I've written. Unless something new occurs, I won't be posting any more on this topic -- for some days, anyway.

My piece of yesterday drew, however, some good comments from my e-mail list.  Here is one from Susan M. Power, Standing Rock Sioux, and a gifted writer with a new book forthcoming in February.  Her mother, Susan K. Power, a little less than ten years older than me, remains an active campaigner for Native rights.  They are among our oldest friends -- we have all known each other for over 40 years.  Following Susan's comment, I am attaching FYI a brief round-up introduction I used when I sent yesterday's message to folks who hadn't gotten most of my regular postings on the topic.


That's really scary stuff -- I'm glad you're aware, armed and ready to protect yourselves!  Yikes.

NOTE BY HUNTER BEAR: AUGUST 14 2013

While I sent the following out widely early this morning, this special note is for those who may not have gotten a reasonably full picture of some of our very contemporary challenges.  Here are several examples from just the last several weeks:  people prowling around our 'way-up-on-the-edge home at night, searches of our garbage container (!), a mysterious effort to break into our home, a major computer attack -- unsuccessful -- on our website which holds several open pages and several non-public pages dealing with the history of our harassment ever since we came here to Idaho in July, 1997.  Some of this nefarious stuff stemmed from North Dakota, where we had previously resided for 16 years, and into which some rank and defamatory poison had been brought in relatively surreptitious fashion by a person from Jackson, Mississippi.  All of these website pages are in safe places far and away.

Very recently, when Syracuse University Press sent me, as Professor Hunter Gray, my copy of Brian Rice's book on Iroquois cosmology and related dimensions, someone "down town" had poked a hole about a dime's width right in the middle of the address side.  It penetrated all the way down through the bubble-wrap to the book's cover.  Damaged postal mail, some of it very damaged, has characterized our situation here at various points since we came in '97.  Perhaps my "title" of Professor (which I myself rarely use) upset some of the local bird-dogs and their stereotypes.  Perhaps they see us as "trouble-making half-breeds."  Well, we are "half-breeds" ("half-bloods" is the appropriate term), and we are proud of it.

In any event, we are vigilant -- sensibly so: a few loaded firearms, floodlights, a huge and ferocious dog.  Actually, it's rather pleasant to sit in our darkened living room in the very early morning hours, drinking coffee and smoking my pipe, listening to Sirius music -- and with my revolver residing on my adjacent table on the latest issue of Backpacker magazine.
