I remember James Yellowbank from the early and mid-70s in Chicago. Did not know him well but always saw him as a good guy who avoided the sharper factional ventures so endemic in those days.

Rarely hunted white tail deer but I know their often grain fed venison is as good as that of mule deer -- with which I am quite familiar. The latter predominate heavily in the Mountain West. As you know, in the prong count, it's traditional to count those on only one antler side of the mule deer, whereas with white tails, prongs on both antlers are tallied.

A friend of mine named James Yellowbank once told me that when he goesfishing he sprinkles a little tobacco on the water to give thanks to thefish. I always liked that ice, although I have not done that myself. 

Butrespect for nature includes hunting and fishing. I generally go deerhunting (white tail) over thanksgiving holidays. I go by myself and use ashotgun. I sit and don't shoot unless one comes in my range (not too faraway when you use a shotgun). Seasons go by without firing a shot but theexperience is special just watching nature go by. When I have shot deer,the experience of shooting, skinning and butchering has only deepened myrespect for the wonders of nature.Dave Ranney
