While we may be rather geographicallyisolated up here in the Idaho mountain=
country, we keep up with all sorts ofthings reasonably well.From all we fe=
eland hear, all signs and certainly all of the political fortune tellers, s=
ee avery significant Republican sweep dead ahead.
As I mentioned earlier today inanother post, a contract conflict between CN=
N/Turner (or Turner/CNN) and DishNetwork, has taken that and a few othercha=
nnels from our Dish =E2=80=93 but we do retain many TV news sources =E2=80=
=93 including MSNBCand Al Jazeera.
The Obama administration has failed.This now seems to be the sense of even =
hismost ardent supporters.But a great manyof them failed him, beginning ear=
ly on when obvious problems were arising onmany administration fronts and t=
hey, his friends and supporters, handled himwith kid gloves, providing eith=
er silence or rationalizations =E2=80=93 often blamingeverything negative o=
n the Republicans and ignoring the fact that, at hisoutset, Obama had both =
houses of Congress.(He could have easily gotten the now almost forgotten La=
bor Law Reformeasily in his early years. Same with a bona fide public optio=
n in nationalhealth care.)
There have been many blunders in thepast years, some Republican but, more r=
ecently, it=E2=80=99s certainly been much theDemocrats.A major blunder was =
that of embracinggun control. That=E2=80=99s something, of course, to which=
I, a gun owner and huntersince age seven, have been staunchly opposed almo=
st all of my life =E2=80=93 increasingly aware experientially andsociologic=
ally that the crime control dimension of any gun control is very,very negli=
gible and that it totally misses the real causes of crime which liein such =
dimensions as racism and poverty, alienation, and mental illness.
A number of the current races arestill narrow.The gun control push onthe he=
els of the Sandy Hook tragedy was great theatre for those many Democratswho=
support it. Obama reveled in it for months.As a result, the membership rol=
ls of gun rights groups swelledenormously, purchases of firearms and ammuni=
tionrose to monumental proportions, and the oftensingle-issue gun owners an=
d/or gun rights people mobilized for just such daysas tomorrow=E2=80=99s vo=
te =E2=80=93 and beyond.TheDemocratic Party is now, once again, the party o=
f gun control, and even thosemany Democratic candidates who do not support =
it carry that taint.
That is the case here in Idaho.My good wife and I voted absentee since shes=
till continues to have some difficulty getting around.We voted for every De=
mocrat since, in the GemState, that=E2=80=99s the radical party these days.=
There is one Democratic candidate in which we are especiallyhopeful.A.J. Ba=
lukoff is runningagainst Butch Oliver in the gubernatorial race.Oliver has =
already had three terms and wants a fourth.Balukoff has said Zero about gun=
s and wolvesbut has been under heavy attack via charges he=E2=80=99s soft o=
n the 2ndAmendment and is planning to import morewolves into the state.The =
latter issilly on its face but the former =E2=80=93 soft on the 2nd and thu=
simplicitly in favor of gun control relates directly to the unfortunate pos=
itionof the national party.
Idaho=E2=80=99s expenditures for K-12education are close to the national bo=
ttom.Balukoff, quite knowledgeable on education issues, plans a substantial=
rejuvenation in that realm.He does havesignificant support.=20
