=E2=80=9D should never be raised.It=E2=80=99s an inherently fraudulent issu=
e,consistently volatile in the most emotional sense, and the measures it pr=
oposes will, (and have had ,inthose few cases where they=E2=80=99ve been en=
acted), no significant crime controleffect.As I=E2=80=99ve said to the poin=
t ofendless redundancy, the causes of crime lie in, among others, the realm=
s of racism,poverty, alienation, and mental illness.Those issues are very r=
arely addressed in substance.The current administration, full of emptyverbi=
age about its commitment to poor and working class people, is nowpreparing =
to secure five and a half billion dollars for the new Iraq war =E2=80=93som=
ething that likely will be supported by the so-called fiscal conservativeso=
n the political right as well as by many ostensible Democratic =E2=80=9Clib=

As this article from The Hillindicates, and Washington Post had something s=
imilar, NRA-backed gun rightscandidates won in the great majority of cases.=
The NRA, politically non-partisan, supports the incumbent candidate ifthe p=
erson has an A on gun rights.Wheretwo new candidates are the only ones runn=
ing,the NRA supports the person with an A, who may be of either major party=
.Long ago, via Bill Clinton, the DemocraticParty became labeled as the part=
y of gun control.That was beginning to fade until theill-starred and unsucc=
essful gun control efforts of a year ago.
The modest =E2=80=9Cgun control=E2=80=9D victory inWashington State is not =
too surprising.I know the Sea/Tac region pretty well.The region, to use Lew=
is Mumford=E2=80=99s classification, is a true megalopolis=E2=80=93 stretch=
ing from Everett (where my mother was born) through huge Seattle, through f=
ast growing Tacoma,and embracing Olympia.The rest of thestate is rural/smal=
l town/small city.Major USSC decisions have upheld the Second Amendment=E2=
=80=99s =E2=80=9Cright to keepand bear arms=E2=80=9D =E2=80=93 and we=E2=80=
=99ll have to see how that plays out in the courts and viawhat will be grow=
ing grassroots political resistance.
We here in Idaho had no problem voting a straight Democratic ticket. I don'=

oters are in favor of gun control, even if Republicans in Congress are not.
They cite a recent Quinnipiac University poll finding that 92 percent of gu=
nowners and 86 percent of Republican voters support universal background ch=

Washington will eventually come around, they contend.=20
