I=E2=80=99ve never claimed to be a mainspringof the peace movement. In fact=
, my knowledge of its internal currents and intricacies is quite limited.  =
My primarycommitments have consistently been Native rights, union labor, ci=
vil rights,civil liberties (I am not ranking those.). I have been opposed t=
o all U.S.military actions from Vietnam on, occasionally participating in d=
emonstrations,often through writing and speaking.
At this point, =E2=80=9Call indicators=E2=80=9D pointto a very rapidly expa=
nding U.S. role in the now well underway new Iraq War.U.S. air power and os=
tensible =E2=80=9Csupport troops=E2=80=9D are being speedily increased, the=
rehave been significant defections to the other side by so-called =E2=80=9C=
moderate=E2=80=9DSyrian rebels (accompanied by a great deal of their U.S. -=
 given military equipment),the =E2=80=9Callies=E2=80=9D are contributing li=
ttle, the Pentagon wants ground troops by spring, and as a fiscal starter a=
tthis point, Obama wants five and half billion dollars to fund U.S. involve=
mentin the war.
Basically, it=E2=80=99s a clusterf----ck.  I can even see a possibility,wel=
l into the future, that voluntary enlistments could fall off sharply and th=
epossibility of a military draft would become very real.  That would stir t=
he waters =E2=80=93 but the war bythen would be deeply institutionalized.
My question is, What=E2=80=99s the status ofthe national American peace mov=
ement? (I am not referring to local peacegroups.)  It was bold when Bush wa=
spresident.  It=E2=80=99s been pretty quiescentsince Obama took office =E2=
=80=93 though there have been very good dissident voices.

Syrian rebels (accompanied by a great deal of their U.S. - given military e=
quipment),
the =E2=80=9Callies=E2=80=9D are contributing little,<span>&nbsp;
</span>the Pentagon wants ground troops by spring, and as a fiscal starter =
at
this point, Obama wants five and half billion dollars to fund U.S. involvem=
ent
in the war.</font></span></b></div>
