If you are a sophomore or junior student of color who wants to work for soc=
ial justice, the Union Scholars Program may be for you. Work on the frontli=
nes of a real union organizing campaign. Talk to workers about gaining a vo=
ice on the job, fair wages, and benefits for themselves and their families =
- by joining a union. You will have a chance to make a difference in people=
's lives. Plus, you will receive scholarship funding and have a real world =
experience that may lead to post-graduation career opportunities.
The Union Scholars Program is jointly sponsored by the American Federation =
of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO (AFSCME), the Thurgood Ma=
rshall College Fund, and the Harvard University Labor and Worklife Program.=
AFSCME represents 1.6 million members - people you meet every day in your =
community. They are social workers, nurses, sanitation workers, clerical wo=
rkers, teacher's aides, and countless others dedicated to public service.
If you are selected, you will receive:
10-week summer field placement, during which you will participate in a unio=
n organizing campaign in one of several locations across the United States.=
A stipend of up to $4,000 for the summer.On-site housing at your locationA =
week-long orientation and trainingAn academic scholarship of up to $6,300 f=
or the 2015-2016 school year, based on successful performanceTo be eligible=
you must:
Be a sophomore or junior during the application and interview process;Have =
