Thursday night, about 10:30 p.m., Eldri became quite ill.The symptoms were =
somewhat suggestive of astroke =E2=80=93 but not fully. At that point, Eldr=
i, among other things, had difficulty walking. I immediately decided =E2=80=
=9Cemergency room=E2=80=9D, Mariaconcurred. We called Thomas and Mimie inMi=
nnesota forthwith, the Mayo-based medical professionals in our family, brie=
fedthem.Thomas talkedvery quickly with Eldri and, as per ourall-around cons=
ensus, and with his medical assessment, contacted the PocatelloFire Departm=
ent via 911 for speedy transit .Thomas felt it could be either amini stroke=
-- and a prelude to a bigger one, or a dangerous infection. It would have =
been impossible for Mariaand I to get Eldri safely downstairs to the front =
door by ourselves.Six or seven men were at our home withinminutes =E2=80=93=
a first rate and most praiseworthy response =E2=80=93 and, while Mariarall=
ied other family members hereabouts and far away, I rode with the ambulance=
driver to the ER.I carried my bear clawwith me.
Over the next several hours, Eldrihad a number of medical tests.It wasdeter=
mined early on that this was not a stroke, or related to her serious but =
=E2=80=9Cundercontrol=E2=80=9D heart situation.Thomas andMimie remained in =
contact with Maria and others in our family, and there wasmuch cell phone a=
ctivity conveying my reports from the ER.After much time had passed, it was=
determinedthat this was a significant bladder infection, potentially very =
dangerous. (Thomaslater noted that older ladies can contract this type of i=
nfection with no outersigns.) Eldri was given an anti-biotic Intravenously =
and prescriptions forlots more.It was decided that, sinceshe had a strong s=
upport system, she could return home.Theever-faithful Josie arrived with he=
r family Jeep and we got home at 5 a.m.Sleep was very negligible for all of=
us.
This has been a rough year for us.But, as I had told Eldri and Maria muchea=
rlier Thursday evening, coincidentally or otherwise, hours before this rose=
up, =E2=80=9CThere isn=E2=80=99t anything that the three of us can=E2=80=99=
t get through =E2=80=93 and thatincludes our whole family as well.=E2=80=9D
