Good for Obama on this one =E2=80=93 relative normalization of relations wi=
th Cuba.
His move to break the log jam onimmigration was a good first step =E2=80=93=
but this, vastly more pervasive, goes much,much further and opens the door=
to many long overdue changes. Good for PopeFrancis who was certainly invol=
ved in this =E2=80=93 and good for the Castro brothers.
I=E2=80=99ve always seen the Cuban Revolutionas very much in the democratic=
traditions of Latin America.Same with Venezuela and a number of other sett=
ings.
A few years ago, a large delegationof economic and political leaders from N=
orth Dakota visited Cuba.Nodaks have never been prone to sit aroundtheir di=
nner tables fretting about =E2=80=9CCommunism=E2=80=9D, real or alleged.Sev=
eral in the delegation were people we knowpretty well.They came back, quite=
impressed with the country and saw numerous mutually productive trade possi=
bilities.
I am sure C. Wright Mills is smiling =E2=80=93 wherever he is.
Ernest Hemingway, too.
