Mary Ann, originally from Meridian, Mississippi, was a Tougaloo student of =
mine and a Jackson Movement activist. She recently retired as a top staffer=
at one of Chicago's largest hospitals. Here she gives some of the thoughts=
of her brother, a veteran L.A. police officer. "WWW" -- We Will Win -- is =

Interesting comments. I can only say Amen. I have no problem with peaceful =
protesting but there is absolutely no excuse for looting.=20
Personally, my brother , a retired lieutenant on LAPD was on that force for=
36 & 1/2 years and never shot a single person. He worked gangs,
drugs, grand theft auto, prostitution , etc. Said he can recall a minimum o=
f 5 or 6 occasions when he could have shot someone and would have been foun=
d justifiable.
He chose to talk with people instead. He acknowledges that there are some t=
rigger happy policemen, scared policemen and racist policemen . He agrees t=
hat most policemen are good guys who want to serve and do a good job.=20

For the moment,at least, this appears successful.Theprotest movements need =
to regroup fast =96 and keep going.If they don=92t do so, there are always,=
tragically, going to be many new victims.Given the racial and social class =
bias in this country, some of this isinevitable.But effective protests cans=
ave many lives.

As ageneral rule, police resent =93meddling=94 from outsiders.
Many policeindeed have, however buried, an inferiority complex.With local e=
xceptions, police are not seen ashigh-status by any stretch.
Afterseveral years in Chicago, I came to the conclusion that about one thir=
d of police are good people, onethird are not good, and the other one third=
will go with whomever they=92reclosely associated work-wise.
I know thatbreakdown issweeping generalization =96but, in time, I have come=
to see that as the national reality.
