I=E2=80=99ve been up much of this night.Eldri, coming along pretty well des=
pite theseveral medical vicissitudes, had difficulty sleeping and I don=E2=
=80=99t like her upalone.
As welcome and relative normalcyappears to be approaching in the matter of =
U.S./Cuban relations, recentdiscussions on RBB have produced interesting re=
actions to the CubanRevolution.In my case, I=E2=80=99ve been supportiveof i=
t from its very outset =E2=80=93 and even before it assumed power.Here are =
excerpts from a page on ourHunterbear website:
In theNovember, 1957 issue of Argosy magazine, the introductory blurb of
the first piece -- "The Caribbean Legion" -- reads thusly:
"From all over the world they come -- soldiers of fortune and fighting
idealists alike -- to join the deadly little group known as the Caribbean
Legion. Here is the amazing story of this shadowy army and how it plugsthe
guns of Latin America's strong-arm dictators."
The primary focus is Cuba and the lead photo's key face absolutely has to b=
e
the very young Fidel -- surrounded by several comrades -- all holding up
rifles. It's a very friendly and pro-revolutionary article and I read it
pronto.
Immediately following that is the second piece. Its lavish illustration in
color, spread over two pages, is the lead short story in the magazine:
"Last of the Wild Ones" by John R. Salter, Jr. [who, in time, becameHunter
Gray.]
Of course, I read that one, too. And with great and deep appreciation. I've
always been an unabashed admirer of that writer.
Argosy was a hell of a good "man's magazine" -- chock full of allsorts of
well-done fictional and non-fictional pieces. Its circ came close to two
million.=20
My story -- "Last of the Wild Ones" -- involves wilderness trappingin
Northern Arizona, the wisdom of age, and the greed of callow and very
hungry youth. . . .
Threeyears later, the very fine Left literary magazine, Mainstream,
published [May, 1960] my soon-to-be award-winning short story, "The
Destroyers", which deals with virulent race hatred in the context of a
massive Northern Arizona forest fire. And, in the same issue, his namewith
mine on the very same Red cover, is Fidel Castro -- whose essay, "InPraise
of Learning," speaks to the vigorous efforts and substantial gains ofCuban
revolutionary educational endeavor.
I've always liked Fidel. Much. And Argosy magazine helped that, for sure, a=

In veryearly 1961, of course, the JFK/CIA forces attempted via surrogates t=
o violentlyoverthrow the Cuban revolution and its newly established sociali=
st government =E2=80=93expecting much of the Cuban populationto join this n=
efarious venture designed to restore =E2=80=9C America=E2=80=99s Lost Plant=
ation.=E2=80=9C The mass of the Cuban people did rise up =E2=80=93 with act=
ive firearms =E2=80=93 totally againstthe invaders.
I saw itssystemic arrangement then and see it now as its own version of soc=
ialism, owing much indeed to thetraditions of the Mexican Revolution.=20
I amcertainly quite convinced, as I have been since I've been a Teen, that
the great River-thrust of History -- the dichotomy of working
class/employing class will carry us all -- all colors and all cultures --
into genuine humanistic socialist democracy.But the rich cultural diversity=
of human ethnicity and society willcertainly endure and shape that sociali=
sm in their own unique ways. That iscertainly underway and has been for a v=
ery long time.
In brief, I see no all-encompassing, globalmonolith in Humanity=E2=80=99s f=
uture.
At thetime of the attempted American overthrow of the Cuban Revolution, I w=
asbeginning my second semester of sociology teaching at Superior State Coll=
ege,Wisconsin.(This was my first year ofcollege teaching and a few months b=
efore Eldri and I married and entered theMagnolia State in late summer, =E2=
=80=9961.)Iwas having all of my several hundred students (five large sectio=
ns per semester)read C. Wright Mills=E2=80=99 pro-Cuban Revolution LISTEN Y=
ANKEE =E2=80=93 something that,along with other activities of mine, much up=
set the Birchy Texan and NationalGuard general who had somehow become presi=
dent of the school.In the decades that followed, whether inacademe or out i=
n the field, I=E2=80=99ve consistently supported revolutionary Cuba.In all =
of this I have found that:
Few Americans have given much thoughtto the incredible pressures generated =
by unremitting American hostility to Cuba=E2=80=93 pressures which Cuba has=
weathered commendably well.
Until 9/11, few Americans were aware that theUnited States has maintained a=
key military base on Cuban soil.
And few Americans are aware even nowthat, from the outset, the Cuban govern=
ment has supported the presence of avery substantial number of privately ow=
ned firearms at and among the Cubangrassroots.This isn=E2=80=99t as pervasi=
ve orformalized as the Swiss system =E2=80=93 but it=E2=80=99s definitely d=
efense of one=E2=80=99s sovereignnation.Estimates vary but a reputableand s=
tatistically conservative source places the figure at about 220,000firearms=
, some =E2=80=9Clegally registered=E2=80=9D and some not =E2=80=93 but all =
existent as pergovernment policy. Shotguns predominatewhich makes sense in =
a small island with high population density).(This degree of firearms owner=
ship alone saysa great deal to refute false charges of =E2=80=9Cdictatorshi=
