This is a kind of selectivemini-memoir, reaching back into the latter 1950s=
and the earlier part of the1960s =E2=80=93 embracing a number of diverse a=
nd good people of strong social justicefeelings, much of this in the Red Sc=
are epoch.I could write much more on that and comparable periods but am kee=
pingthis within the limits stirred by a very recent letter from a long ago =
student of mineat a small college, Wisconsin State at Superior, in northern=
Wisconsin.=20
Many in Eastern Idaho, including ourfamily, have been hit by the nationally=
notorious flu.We all weathered that, some withanti-biotics, but in my case=
a troubling cough persisted.My domestic responsibilities considerablyincre=
ased of late, and thus not inclined to take chances, I went to a medicalout=
post where I was given a chest X Ray.The doc told me I had pneumonia and, w=
hen I asked -- was there anything moreserious, such as COPD which had taken=
one my best friends some years ago, I waslooked at like I was a high schoo=
l kid and told pneumonia was veryserious.In the end, with an array ofmedici=
nes, I threw that off handily.Imay have had it for some time.
The letter came from Mark, nowretired from a long and successful teaching c=
areer.It said, in part, =E2=80=9CYou inspired me then andalthough I could n=
ever be as strong and as tough as you, I have done a few goodthings in a li=
fe filled with luck.Thememory of you inspires me still.=E2=80=9D
Drinking black coffee and smoking mytobacco pipe for several hours very ear=
ly this morning, I traveled back intotime.I wrote Mark later this morning,s=
aying in part:
=E2=80=9C I very much appreciate your goodwords =E2=80=93 and glad to know =
my role at Superior, as activist and teacher, wasencouraging in those chall=
enging days and circumstances.
It=E2=80=99s beena hell of a challenging period for literally everyone we k=
now.One of my major struggles these days is tomaintain my normally high opt=
imism and faith in most of Humanity.So far, I think I=E2=80=99ve been succe=
ssful.
The factis, in that =E2=80=98way back time that doesn=E2=80=99t seem that l=
ong ago, it was =E2=80=9Cyoustudents=E2=80=9D who certainly inspired me!Iha=
ve always remembered you all =E2=80=93 with the greatest appreciation and E=
ldri feelsexactly the same way.We handled somevery tough challenges effecti=
vely and well. You, yourself, were certainly a major figure inthat struggle=
.
The agedifference between myself and you all was obviously pretty minimal. =
(I note youare 78 and I am virtually 81.)AtSuperior, as at my one year of h=
igh school teaching in the Nebraska Sandhillscountry a couple of years befo=
re I got to Wisconsin, I felt no social distancebetween myself as a teacher=
-- and my students =E2=80=93 from whom I always learn much whatever the se=
tting and times.
In fact,that=E2=80=99s been basically my ethos everywhere I have gone as a =
=E2=80=9Cprofessor.=E2=80=9DI=E2=80=99ve often told classes, =E2=80=9CI=E2=
=80=99m not really aprofessor, just pretending to be one.=E2=80=9D
I arrivedat Superior State College as it was often known, as an instructor,=
in late summer,1960, fresh from a few months on super isolated Bear Mounta=
in Fire Lookout inextreme eastern Arizona and armed with a fresh M.A. from =
Arizona State,Tempe.I had been hired at the lastminute. I was already a rea=
sonably experienced organizer, militant labor andstudent rights, and my own=
kind of radical, but its president, Jim Dan Hillknew nothing personal of m=
y background, save that I was a good part Indian, a veteran and an Arizonia=
n.
No soonerat that college, I learned it was the super authoritarian fiefdom =
of itspresident, General Jim Dan Hill, best described as a Texas Bircher,My=
sociology teaching load was very heavy, fine with me.Hill and I clashed ear=
ly on when, in hisweekly newspaper column, =E2=80=9CLet=E2=80=99s Look At T=
he Record=E2=80=9D he praised the witchhunting House Un-American Activities=
Committee, and the purely awful red-baitingfilm, =E2=80=9COperation Abolit=
ion, which attacked the student protestors and their militant organization =
=E2=80=93 SLATE =E2=80=93 whohad challenged HUAC during its hearings in the=
Bay Area early in 1960 via very vigorousdemonstrations.=20
(Decades later, I met the good Bill Mandel,then about 90, on our discussion=
lists He had played a very constructive and centrallyactivist ant-HUAC rol=
e in those very events.We found we had crossed trails many times in our liv=
es.I was about the last person interviewed byBill on his weekly radio progr=
am at Berkeley =E2=80=93 KPFA =E2=80=93 on Native concerns inlate 2005.Shor=
tly after that, Bill wasstruck by a car, badly injured, and became inactive=
.He remains much missed.)
I wrote along letter to the paper attacking HUAC, the film, and praising th=
e studentactivists. It was published.
And Ifound I was an instant celebrity in Superior where few, and certainly =
virtuallyno faculty, ever criticized General Hill openly.I also learned the=
re was a long extant movement against Hill out in thecommunity =E2=80=93 bu=
t it had lost a good deal of steam.
Early on,the college Ski Club, all male, saw me and recognized the kind of =
facultysponsor they=E2=80=99d like =E2=80=93 not a fussy professorial and i=
ntrusive type.Though no ski buff =E2=80=93 I am a snowshoes guy =E2=80=93 I=
agreed to be their faculty cover.Soonthereafter, the SkI Club had one of it=
s big parties =E2=80=93 no females and prettytame by today=E2=80=99s standa=
rds.But, perhapsbecause of my role as sponsor =E2=80=93 I wasn=E2=80=99t at=
the affair =E2=80=93 the Dean of Students,a classic Hill sycophant,officia=
llyabolished the Club.We talked to StudentGovernment which protested the De=
an=E2=80=99s action.The Dean and General Hill then abolishedStudent Governm=
ent in total.
I and agood number of students, some Ski and many others, then had a large =
massprotest meeting in the college auditorium.
And theWar against Hill was on.Mark, my goodand very recent correspondent, =
was among the first to join the effort.It was then that I learned that Mark=
=E2=80=99s uncle,a resident of Superior, was a national VP of the American =
Federation ofTeachers =E2=80=93 and an old friend of Bill Karnes, also a na=
tional VP of AFT, andpresident of Phoenix Local 1010 of AFT . Among my seve=
ral active unionaffiliations was my at-large membership in 1010.
Bill wasone of a great many AFL-CIO unionists in Arizona and elsewhere who =
politely andfirmly ignored the flow of attempted mandates from the Federati=
on=E2=80=99s top level =E2=80=93most generated by the predatory Steel Union=
=E2=80=93 seeking to prevent contact withthe Mine, Mill and Smelter Worker=
s, widely seen by its critics as =E2=80=9CCommunist.=E2=80=9DMy own relatio=
ns with Mine Mill were veryclose indeed. Bill Karnes and other teacher unio=
nists had always appreciatedMine Mill=E2=80=99s considerable assistance in =
organizing AFT locals in the miningtowns.AFL-CIO craft unions were muchinvo=
lved with Mine Mill in fighting the copper companies.And, in any case, Mine=
Mill, with 10,000 plusmembers in Arizona =E2=80=93 the largest union in th=
e state which, in 1956 and 1957,had won bargaining rights at two major Magm=
a Copper properties =E2=80=93 could hardlybe ignored.
One ofBill=E2=80=99s best high school students, Rodney, eventually went to =
UC at Berkeleywhere he immediately connected with under-grad and grad stude=
nts who wereforming the radical campus political party, SLATE.One of the la=
tter was the older economicsstudent Clinton Jencks, always a widespread and=
beneficial influence, and lateof Mine Mill, Salt of the Earth, the Jencks =
Case.They were all involved together in the anti-HUACfight.
Back atSuperior, our student movement, mostly Anglo but some Native, mushro=
omedfast.We put out a regularly issued andfiery but rational mimeographed p=
rotestjournal, focused on many education issues and certainly student and f=
acultyacademic freedom =E2=80=93 and, too, faculty and staff salary discrim=
ination. We begansystematically contacting potential allies =E2=80=93 e.g.,=
political, labor, andgeneral community members, The somewhat dormant, broa=
d and very diverseant-Hill community movement began to stir =E2=80=93 then =
came vigorously alive.=20
But thestudents, Mark and many others indeed, who often didn=E2=80=99t see =
themselves asactivists, were the consistent spear-point.General Hill attack=
ed me as an atheist and an advocate of free love (thelatter for my support,=
voiced in my Marriage and Family course, of the Swedishsystem of trial mar=
riage. ) Only a little more surreptitiously did he and his cohortsattack me=
consistently as a Communist.FBI documents of concerning me, secured many y=
ears later via FOIA/PA,indicate Hill brought the willing FBI into it all as=
an ally very early on.
The fightwent through the entire spring semester of 1961.
Mark=E2=80=99sAFT uncle introduced me, at an AFT conference, to Governor Ga=
ylord Nelson(later U.S. Senator).We had a short butvery productive discussi=
on.Soon afterthat, the Gov appointed a member of the Board of Regents as a =
kind of collegeoverseer.At the end of that spring term,Hill was given only =
three or so more years and his powers were sharply limited.He was required =
to get Regents=E2=80=99 approval forany significant policy and fiscal appro=
priations decisions.
Eldri,then employed on campus by several Lutheran churches as their student=
counselor, had come to my attention when a member of the still functioning =
SkiClub (however unofficial its status) and an Irish Catholic, told me that=
=E2=80=9DaLutheran girl=E2=80=9D had a phonograph record of SLATE=E2=80=99=
s anti-HUAC protests.Thus I met Eldri and we were married a fewmonths later=
at a very well attended wedding.We left Superior in the summer of 1961 for=
Mississippi teaching andorganizing -- and my later organizing with the lef=
tist Southern ConferenceEducational Fund in the Northeastern North Carolina=
Black Belt. We finally leftthe South in 1967 and went on to many other tou=
gh campaigns, and college/universityteaching =E2=80=93 often an activist en=
deavor in its own right.=20
Over theyears, Eldri and I kept in touch with as many of our old friends an=
d fellowcombatants as we could.In the fall of1965, I carefully wrote the ba=
sic draft of what became the first edition of mybook on our massive Jackson=
Movement of 1961-63.When that was finally published in 1979, itdid OK sale=
s-wise =E2=80=93 but I also sent over 100 copies as gifts to as many of our=
old fighting friends I could locate.
Duringthe civil rights period, I went on a few speaking junkets. Bill Karne=
s, inArizona, played a key role, along with Harry Stamler, a veteran radica=
l, in settingup speaking engagements for me in Phoenix metro.Aware that my =
only life insurance was myGI/VA policy which I had continued, and that I co=
uldn=E2=80=99t get one in Dixie, Local1010 quickly provided a good one for =
me.
TheArizona Mine Mill Council was as pleased to have me as its major speaker=
on thecivil rights movement as I was to appear before that very large gath=
ering ofits many Arizona local unions.
GeneralHill returned to Texas.In 1981, a goodfriend, Duane Hale, Creek Indi=
an and an academic historian, ran across Hill atthe West Texas Historical C=
onference.Hereported that the Old Dragon was old and frail.
Manyyears after all of this, I learned from our good friend, Stephen Zunes,=
who wehave known since he was a precocious seven year old, that Bill Karne=
s was hiscousin on his mother=E2=80=99s side.Notsurprised at all.
In theold days =E2=80=93 going back in time a good ways =E2=80=93 it has al=
ways seemed to me thatfriends and foes alike were much more candidly open i=
n their positions, oftenduking it out, mostly nonviolently but sometimes no=
t.Nowadays, all sorts of disingenuous stuff,often covert back-biting and ba=
ck-knifing, seem much more common on the part ofour adversaries, and occasi=
onally even a few of our ostensible allies.
Thepeople I have mentioned fondly and well were, and those who remain still=
, arevery fine people.I wouldn=E2=80=99t try ideologicalanalysis on any of =
them and their productive contributions -- or theirmultitude of interesting=
inter-connections.Asmy old cowboy/artist and radical mentor, Frank Dolphin=
, was sometimes prone totrenchantly note:

found I was an instant celebrity in Superior where few, and certainly virtu=

no faculty, ever criticized General Hill openly.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun=

</span>I also learned there was a long extant movement against Hill out in =
the
community =E2=80=93 but it had lost a good deal of steam.</font></span></b>=
</p><div><font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3">
</font></div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"line-heigh=
t: 107%; font-size: 16pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">Early on,
the college Ski Club, all male, saw me and recognized the kind of faculty
sponsor they=E2=80=99d like =E2=80=93 not a fussy professorial and intrusiv=
e type.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Though no ski buff =
=E2=80=93 I am a snowshoes guy =E2=80=93 I
agreed to be their faculty cover.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;"> =
</span>Soon
thereafter, the SkI Club had one of its big parties =E2=80=93 no females an=
d pretty
tame by today=E2=80=99s standards.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;"> =
</span>But, perhaps
because of my role as sponsor =E2=80=93 I wasn=E2=80=99t at the affair =E2=
=80=93 the Dean of Students,
a classic Hill sycophant,<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>o=
fficially
abolished the Club.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We talk=
ed to Student
Government which protested the Dean=E2=80=99s action.<span style=3D"mso-spa=
cerun: yes;">
</span>The Dean and General Hill then abolished<span style=3D"mso-spacerun:=
yes;">
</span>Student Government in total.</font></span></b></p><div><font face=3D=
"Times New Roman" size=3D"3">
</font></div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"line-heigh=
t: 107%; font-size: 16pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">I and a
good number of students, some Ski and many others, then had a large mass
protest meeting in the college auditorium.</font></span></b></p><div><font =
face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3">
</font></div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"line-heigh=
t: 107%; font-size: 16pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">And the
War against Hill was on.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Ma=
rk, my good
and very recent correspondent, was among the first to join the effort.<span=
style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It was then that I learned that=
Mark=E2=80=99s uncle,
a resident of Superior, was a national VP of the American Federation of
Teachers =E2=80=93 and an old friend of Bill Karnes, also a national VP of =
AFT, and
president of Phoenix Local 1010 of AFT . Among my several active union
affiliations was my at-large membership in 1010.</font></span></b></p><div>=
<font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3">
</font></div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"line-heigh=
t: 107%; font-size: 16pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">Bill was
one of a great many AFL-CIO unionists in Arizona and elsewhere who politely=
and
firmly ignored the flow of attempted mandates from the Federation=E2=80=99s=
top level =E2=80=93
most generated by the predatory Steel Union =E2=80=93 seeking to prevent co=
ntact with
the Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers, widely seen by its critics as =E2=80=9C=
Communist.=E2=80=9D<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>My own =
relations with Mine Mill were very
close indeed. Bill Karnes and other teacher unionists had always appreciate=
d
Mine Mill=E2=80=99s considerable assistance in organizing AFT locals in the=
mining
towns.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>AFL-CIO craft unions=
were much
involved with Mine Mill in fighting the copper companies.<span style=3D"mso=
-spacerun: yes;"> </span>And, in any case, Mine Mill, with 10,000 plu=
s
members in Arizona =E2=80=93 the largest union in the state which, in 1956 =
and 1957,
had won bargaining rights at two major Magma Copper properties =E2=80=93 co=
uld hardly
be ignored.</font></span></b></p><div><font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=
=3D"3">
</font></div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"line-heigh=
t: 107%; font-size: 16pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">One of
Bill=E2=80=99s best high school students, Rodney, eventually went to UC at =
Berkeley
where he immediately connected with under-grad and grad students who were
forming the radical campus political party, SLATE.<span style=3D"mso-spacer=
un: yes;"> </span>One of the latter was the older economics
student Clinton Jencks, always a widespread and beneficial influence, and l=
ate
of Mine Mill, Salt of the Earth, the Jencks Case.<span style=3D"mso-spaceru=
n: yes;"> </span>They were all involved together in the anti-HUAC
fight.</font></span></b></p><div><font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3">
</font></div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"line-heigh=
t: 107%; font-size: 16pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">Back at
Superior, our student movement, mostly Anglo but some Native, mushroomed
fast.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We put out a regularl=
y issued and
fiery but rational <span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>mimeogra=
phed protest
journal, focused on many education issues and certainly student and faculty
academic freedom =E2=80=93 and, too, faculty and staff salary discriminatio=
n. We began
systematically contacting potential allies =E2=80=93 e.g., political, labor=
, and
general community members, The somewhat dormant, broad and very diverse
ant-Hill community movement began to stir =E2=80=93 then came vigorously al=
ive. </font></span></b></p><div><font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3">
</font></div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"line-heigh=
t: 107%; font-size: 16pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">But the
students, Mark and many others indeed, who often didn=E2=80=99t see themsel=
ves as
activists, were the consistent spear-point.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes=
;">
</span>General Hill attacked me as an atheist and an advocate of free love =
(the
latter for my support, voiced in my Marriage and Family course, of the Swed=
ish
system of trial marriage. ) Only a little more surreptitiously did he and h=
is cohorts
attack me consistently as a Communist.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;">&n=
bsp;
</span>FBI documents of concerning me, secured many years later via FOIA/PA=
,
indicate Hill brought the willing FBI into it all as an ally very early on.=
</font></span></b></p><div><font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3">
</font></div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"line-heigh=
t: 107%; font-size: 16pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">The fight
went through the entire spring semester of 1961.</font></span></b></p><div>=
<font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3">
</font></div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"line-heigh=
t: 107%; font-size: 16pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">Mark=E2=80=99s
AFT uncle introduced me, at an AFT conference, to Governor Gaylord Nelson
(later U.S. Senator).<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We ha=
d a short but
very productive discussion.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span=
>Soon after
that, the Gov appointed a member of the Board of Regents as a kind of colle=
ge
overseer.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>At the end of tha=
t spring term,
Hill was given only three or so more years and his powers were sharply limi=
ted.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He was required to get=
Regents=E2=80=99 approval for
any significant policy and fiscal appropriations decisions.</font></span></=
b></p><div><font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3">
</font></div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"line-heigh=
t: 107%; font-size: 16pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">Eldri,
then employed on campus by several Lutheran churches as their student
counselor, had come to my attention when a member of the still functioning =
Ski
Club (however unofficial its status) and an Irish Catholic, told me that =
=E2=80=9Da
Lutheran girl=E2=80=9D had a phonograph record of SLATE=E2=80=99s anti-HUAC=
protests.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Thus I met Eldri=
and we were married a few
months later at a very well attended wedding.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: y=
es;">
</span>We left Superior in the summer of 1961 for Mississippi teaching and
organizing -- and my later organizing with the leftist Southern Conference
Educational Fund in the Northeastern North Carolina Black Belt. We finally =
left
the South in 1967 and went on to many other tough campaigns, and college/un=
iversity
teaching =E2=80=93 often an activist endeavor in its own right. </font></sp=
an></b></p><div><font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3">
</font></div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"line-heigh=
t: 107%; font-size: 16pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">Over the
years, Eldri and I kept in touch with as many of our old friends and fellow
combatants as we could.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In =
the fall of
1965, I carefully wrote the basic draft of what became the first edition of=
my
book on our massive Jackson Movement of 1961-63.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun=
: yes;"> </span>When that was finally published in 1979, it
did OK sales-wise =E2=80=93 but I also sent over 100 copies as gifts to as =
many of our
old fighting friends I could locate.</font></span></b></p><div><font face=
=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3">
</font></div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"line-heigh=
t: 107%; font-size: 16pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">During
the civil rights period, I went on a few speaking junkets. Bill Karnes, in
Arizona, played a key role, along with Harry Stamler, a veteran radical, in=
setting
up speaking engagements for me in Phoenix metro.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun=
: yes;"> </span>Aware that my only life insurance was my
GI/VA policy which I had continued, and that I couldn=E2=80=99t get one in =
Dixie, Local
1010 quickly provided a good one for me.</font></span></b></p><div><font fa=
ce=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3">
</font></div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"line-heigh=
t: 107%; font-size: 16pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">The
Arizona Mine Mill Council was as pleased to have me as its major speaker on=
the
civil rights movement as I was to appear before that very large gathering o=
f
its many Arizona local unions.</font></span></b></p><div><font face=3D"Time=
s New Roman" size=3D"3">
</font></div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"line-heigh=
t: 107%; font-size: 16pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">General
Hill returned to Texas.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In =
1981, a good
friend, Duane Hale, Creek Indian and an academic historian, ran across Hill=
at
the West Texas Historical Conference.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;">&nb=
sp; </span>He
reported that the Old Dragon was old and frail.</font></span></b></p><div><=
font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3">
</font></div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"line-heigh=
t: 107%; font-size: 16pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">Many
years after all of this, I learned from our good friend, Stephen Zunes, who=
we
have known since he was a precocious seven year old, that Bill Karnes was h=
is
cousin on his mother=E2=80=99s side.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbs=
p; </span>Not
surprised at all.</font></span></b></p><div><font face=3D"Times New Roman" =
size=3D"3">
</font></div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"line-heigh=

old days =E2=80=93 going back in time a good ways =E2=80=93 it has always s=
eemed to me that
friends and foes alike were much more candidly open in their positions, oft=
en
duking it out, mostly nonviolently but sometimes not.<span style=3D"mso-spa=
cerun: yes;"> </span>Nowadays, all sorts of disingenuous stuff,
often covert back-biting and back-knifing, seem much more common on the par=
t of
our adversaries, and occasionally even a few of our ostensible allies.=
</font></span></b></p><div><font face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D"3">
</font></div><p style=3D"margin: 0in 0in 8pt;"><b><span style=3D"line-heigh=
t: 107%; font-size: 16pt;"><font face=3D"Calibri">The
people I have mentioned fondly and well were, and those who remain sti=
ll, are
very fine people.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I wouldn=
=E2=80=99t try ideological
analysis on any of them and their productive contributions -- or their
multitude of interesting inter-connections.<span style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes=
