By "the left," the author means the Democratic Party. A more thorough analysis would discuss recent events in the US PSL, UK Workers Revolutionary Party, and the evolution of womens' rights inside the US SWP, https://againstthecurrent.org/atc211/memoir-of-life-in-the-u-s-swp-a-socialist-womans-experience/, which is now ancient history but may point a way forward for left organizations that don't transform themselves into cults. The left has been grappling with this since the 1950s. In some cases with a measure of success; in other cases, it ripped left groups apart.
