John, You wrote that “the most out of touch of all the winning candidates” in NYC was Darializa Avila Chevalier. Not as I see it, and I fear your approach aids mainstream Dem attacks. She may well be a campist, but she ran on affordability, anti-genocide – and replacing the Dem Party Congressional leadership, who are ultra-weak on fighting Trump’s assaults on immigrants, democracy, etc. She beat an establishment leader who does little for his Latino working-class constituents and endorses Israel vs Palestine. In contrast, the more respectable of the Mamdani Three, Brad Lander, has endorsed Hakeem Jeffries for House leader. Who is more out of touch?

Dealing with campists is complicated. There are a bunch of them in my union, the PSC-CUNY, who are outspoken supporters of the “socialist” Xi Jinping government over, say, the Uyghurs; and the “anti-imperialist” Ayatollahs. Yet when it comes to union issues – strike support, walking picket lines, defending free speech – they are among the most reliable colleagues. Go figure. The best I can make out is that the socialism they favor is top-down, run by condescending saviors who do good things for the masses – but the masses had better shut up, not get in their way, and serve loyally as a battering ram to put the saviors in power.

I don’t know how close this is to someone like Chevalier, but she’ll likely be a better fighter than liberals who would rather see Trump in power than yield to the popular anti-genocide sentiment.
