Ted Zuur=E2=80=99s report on the Colombian election, published at New Polit=
ics and reprinted at LINKS and Against the Current , is the most useful acc=
ount of the crisis yet to appear in our press, and this essay depends on it=
 throughout. [1] ( #_ftn1 ) Its virtues are the virtues of the tradition it=
 comes from. Zuur keeps two questions separate that the solidarity literatu=
re habitually fuses: whether the count was stolen and what the class map of=
 the country shows regardless of the count. His answer to the second questi=
on is the durable finding. Whatever the courts decide, Colombia now contain=
s a near-mass party of the working class and the oppressed, with 12.7 milli=
on votes, facing a recomposed dynastic right preparing to govern by decree.=
 I want to press that finding harder than Zuur does. The government arrivin=
g on August 7 is best understood as a patrimonial house wearing a Bonaparti=
st mask, and the mask does not yet fit. And the response of the Colombian l=
eft, so far, fails the test Hal Draper made the axis of the whole socialist=
 question: self-emancipation. It fails in a specific way. The way is correc=
table.
