For months, President Trump has been predicting that Cuba is about to colla=
pse.

=E2=80=9CIt=E2=80=99s just going to fall,=E2=80=9D he told reporters ( http=
s://www.whitehouse.gov/videos/president-trump-gaggles-with-press-on-air-for=
ce-one-jan-4-2026/ ) on Jan. 4, a day after taking control of Venezuela=E2=
=80=99s oil, which had been Cuba=E2=80=99s lifeline.

He then imposed an oil blockade ( https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/20/world/=
americas/cuba-oil-blockade-trump.html ) that has pushed the island into its=
 worst ever energy crisis, with mass blackouts now lasting nearly all day. =
And yet, more than six months later, the Cuban government and people are st=
ill standing.

This month, we visited the country to understand how. After a week on the g=
round, we found that while Cubans are clearly suffering, they are also doin=
g what perhaps they do best: adapting.
