In doing so, and without even realizing it, Trump is reenacting the failed view of the Neoconservatives. Their first failure was their inability to stop North Korea from going nuclear, but they barrelled on anyway. That is the background to the fact that it is failing again. Here is a summary of the story of its present failure: Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, there arose a train of thought that since the U.S. was now without any challenger, it could invade anywhere. It didn=E2=80=99t even need allies. That was the train of thought= of the neo-conservatives, who instituted the Project for a New American Century, PNAC. The entire 21st century would be dominated by the United States without a challenge! Those who dared to defy the U.S. would face the wrath of US military might, to which nobody could stand up. Or so they thought. Their representative was President George Bush. Among other things, he considered using nuclear weapons to attack Iran. Their real concern was not simply whether the Iran regime would "go nuclear" it was to stop the rise of the Iran regime as a regional rival to Israel. The failure of the war first, ask questions later approach of the neo-cons caused the US capitalist class to bring in Obama and his "diplomacy" first approach. That resulted in the JCPOA, which was opposed by Netanyahu and his blood brother, John McCain. Obama asked, "what is your alternative?" they didn't answer but neo-con strategist Josh Muravchik did: "War is necessary," he said. There is a lot more to how we got here, including Trump's victory in Venezuela, his own personal idiosyncrasies (which wouldn't matter in a bourgeois democracy) and, of course, the thunderous silence of the union leadership. But the end story is that both sides of the argument are right and both sides are wrong: Neither diplomacy nor war can accomplish the aims of US imperialism.
