I did do so, of course, not to demonstrate any sense of smug superiority but to illustrate my generation's good fortune to have come of age in the 60's when our labour was in demand as opposed to the current generation of transient gig workers whose living and working conditions have deteriorated since the so-called neoliberal turn beginning in the 80's. We're the luckiest generation in the history of Western capitalism, the only one to have escaped the poverty, depression, and war experienced by our parents and grandparents and their ancestors and one which has never had to confront the precarity, thwarted hopes and steadily declining living standards of our children and grandchildren.
