one of the things Dave Lindorff publicized (I think Dan Ellsberg uncovered
it) was that right after the US used the A-bomb in Japan, they began to
stockpile them in hopes that before the Soviets got the bomb they could in
effect obliterate the entire Soviet Union with a massive bombing campaign
---FORTUNATELY for the world they had to abandon that idea when they didn't
get enough of a stockpile to completely obliterate the Soviet Union before
the Soviets tested their own bomb.

When TED HALL's role in the development of the Soviet bomb came out in
1996or so, one of Ted's British neighbors said -- "Maybe you're the reason
I'm alive!"
