Marv, this is my whole years long debate with Abe. Even in Trotsky's case...FYI: he probably did speak or at least understand it, but he couldn't read it whatsoever...he was looking at the Jews of Russia (Empire and USSR). He started recognizing Jews more broadly, beyond the Yiddish speaking Jews of the Russian Pale-of-Settlement (all of Western Russian empire, basically) as including the now oppressed Jews of Western Europe in this "Jewish nationality" but certainly no Jews of the North America...and certainly not the Sephardi and Maghrebi Jews who have no relationship whatsoever to Ashkenazi Jewry of Western Europe...he may not even known they exist at all.

Trotsky, in his essays on this in the late 1930s didn't dwell on this a lot, though it was no doubt important to his anti-Nazi perspectives,the key that he was only really beginning to broach the subject of antisemitism.

But even as "identity" Jews were quite far apart, driven by class differentiation primarily and intertwined with racism against Yiddiskite. Generally many German, British, Hungarian Jews wanted nothing to do with the poorer, quite alien (to them) Eastern European Jews. The mostly assimilated and middle-income German and Austrian Jewish-American population segregated themselves from the working class Yiddish speaking Jews of Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York.

Thus no univocality of ideas, indentity or ethnic homogeneity. Thus no "Jewish People" or "Jewish Nation".
