I totally agree with Mark's analysis and description --- I guess one of the interesting questions that remain was were the changes unresistable? --- FIRST to neoliberalism and THEN TO "TRUMPISM" in reaction to the failure of neo-liberalism AND (here I want to add something to Mark's analysis) was the failure of the Democratic Party to offer anything to defend the pre-neo-liberal political economy (the US's piss poor approximation of European Social Democracy in the post New Deal SSA [I am an SSA guy, not a Mandel guy!}) or as neo-liberalism began to crack up (the 2008 - 9 financial crisis) provide any alternative than the ridiculous attempt to hit the "reset" button -- was that set of failures baked into the system already as well. Were there possible alternative "roads not taken"". I think the transformation of the Democratic Party--- which Ferguson and Rogers documented in their book RIGHT TURN (which situates the Democratic surrender to neo-liberalism in the Mondale campaign on 1984 and not the Clinton Presidency as I did) --- made all alternatives impossible. Next question --- did the Biden Administration (with the BUild Back Better Bill that got ki-boshed by Synema and Manchin) have a chance at real structural reforms that might have "worked"?? The reason I ask that question is --- assuming no revolutionary or even left-reformist upsurge such as happened with the organization of the CIO in the 1930s --- are there a set of policies that could be part of an effort to "reform" the domestic economy that could be at the forefront of the arguments against the drift of the Trumpists to facism --- I think it's very unlikely --- given his administration's total mismanagement of the economy and foreign policy (the Iran war) ---that there is a mass Trumpist movement in the future -- But that remains of course a horrible danger.
